The Lady Patriot Soccer Team pulled off the improbable upset in their opening game of the 2007 season, which gave the program and Head Coach David Granniss their 100th victory.
Head Coach David Granniss said, "Reaching the 100 win milestone is something the University can be proud of. It is also a personal triumph, especially since I have had the pleasure of seeing each victory. As I think over the years, the wins are full of great memories and the efforts of great people. My thanks go out to players of the present and the past."
Obtaining the 100th victory was not an easy task because DBU had to defeat NCAA Division I Grambling State University. The Lady Patriots determined not to be
intimidated by the larger school beat them 3-2 in double overtime off a 30-yard game winning goal by Freshman Ally Bales. With the win, the Lady Patriots improved to 1-0, while GSU fell to 0-1.
DBU started out the game hitting on all cylinders when they took a 2-0 lead heading into intermission. The Patriots started the scoring when Sophomore Sarah Meierhofer headed in a perfectly placed pass from Senior Ashley Pfister.
The Lady Patriots determined not to let up from their attacking mode push the score to 2-0, when Bales scored her first of two goals off a strike from 25 yards out. DBU took the lead and the confidence into half time.
The second half saw GSU step up their attack and started wearing down the Lady Patriots, who were playing short handed after several early season injuries. DBU did all they could to hold off the Tigers, but were not able to keep them from tying the game up off a penalty kick and corner kick that went off the Patriots goalie hands.
With the score tied 2-2 at the end of regulation and each team worn out they battled through the first over time. Each team had a chance to score the golden goal but great saves from each goalie kept the score tied heading into the second over time.
The second over time did not last two minutes when Bales struck her second goal of the game giving the Patriots the victory on their home turf.
The Lady Patriots will look to feed off their victory when they travel to Edmond, Oklahoma, to play the
University of
Central Oklahoma on August 28, at 7:00.
