The Lady Patriot Soccer Team improved to 4-1 in conference play on Friday night when they defeated Newman University, 2-1, at Patriot Field. The victory improved DBU's overall record to 6-4, while the Jets fell to 5-5-2 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
DBU took the early lead when Freshman Stephanie Emmert scored her first collegiate goal early in the first half. The Jets goalie passed the ball out into the open field, when Emmert took full advantage of the free ball; she charged in and connected on a shot into the back of the net from 25 yards out.
The Jets tied the score at 1-1 in the 21st minute off a shot from Lauren Benning from 15 yards out. Benning received a crossing pass from Elizabeth Redinger and then put the ball in the back of the net.
With the seconds ticking off in the first half DBU attacked Newman's box and when a shot from 20 yards was blocked by into the field of play by the Jets goalie. Freshman Brittany Layne took full advantage of the loose ball and scored the go ahead goal as the buzzer was sounding to conclude the half. The goal gave the Patriots a 2-1 lead and proved to be the game winning goal.
The second half saw both teams pick up their defensive intensity and both goalies make great saves. DBU goalie Freshman Haley Corbell, made three saves in the second half to secure the victory for the Patriots.
DBU will be in action again on October 16, when they welcome St. Edward's University to Patriot Field for a 4:00 match.
