Lady Patriots Shock TWU with Comeback Victory

The Lady Pioneers from Texas Women's University came to Dallas ready to play.  They stormed out of the gate to a convincing lead over The Lady Patriots, winning the first two sets 26-24 and 25-23.

Even though The Lady Patriots trailed 2-0, the team kept their confidence.  The Lady Patriots came out strong in the third set with a win 25-17 with a huge performance from Senior Lauren Secord who had a game high 18 kills.

The Lady Pioneers had good quality performances throughout from Seniors Sharon Schaffner (10 kills, 19 digs), and Kandis Schroeder (14 kills, 6 digs) who tried to shut down the Patriot front line.  Junior Vickie Mundell seemed to have other plans.  She used her creative play to assist her teammates with a game high 52 assists to help close out the Lady Pioneers in a close fourth set.  A final kill from Junior Lauren Zegarelli finished the set 25-22.

The Lady Patriots stunned their competition in the fifth and final set 15-7 to come out with a victory 3-2 to improve their record to 14-10.  Outstanding defensive play and composure from Junior Erin Black (16 digs), and Junior defensive specialist Amanda Emmert (19 digs) helped the team close out the Lady Pioneers in an thrilling game that was intense until the final point hit the court.

Head Coach Cathy Ray said, "The girls came back from a large deficit, which shows confidence and mental toughness.  It is hard in volleyball to swing the momentum back in your favor when you are down.  We stayed aggressive, kept the ball in play, and could not do anything wrong.  The girls stepped up when it mattered.  That tells me as a coach they are strong in character, and the team truly believes in one another!"

Other Patriot Notables: Freshman Kristin Secord (10 kills), Freshman Kaylyn Frink (7 kills, 14 digs), Jessica Nix (11 kills)

DBU will be in action again on October 23, 2008, when they travel to Guymon, Oklahoma, to take on Oklahoma Panhandle State University in a Heartland Conference match scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
