Heartbreaking Loss for The Lady Patriots

DBU's Women's Soccer Team fell short in overtime against the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Saturday afternoon at Patriot Field.  The Cardinals scored the game winner with three minutes left in the first overtime period to improve their record to 11-1-1, while dropping The Lady Patriots to a 7-7-1 record.

The Lady Patriots took the lead early when Sophomore Ally Bales crossed a ball from a corner kick to Junior Sarah Meierhofer who headed the ball straight past the diving Cardinal goalie to give DBU a 1-0 advantage.

DBU took the lead into halftime after Freshman Hope Adams had a perfectly placed shot from 25 yards out in the 44th minute.

The Lady Patriots could not hold down the Cardinals in the second half when UIW Sophomore Sarah Hernandez headed the ball over the leaping Patriot Goalie Haley Corbell (5 total saves), to tie the match 2-2 and force overtime play.

DBU took confidence and heart into the first overtime period, but could not stop the aggressive play from UIW's Sarah Hernandez (2 goals) who scored the Golden Goal with 3:09 left in overtime to capture the win for the Cardinals.

Heartland Conference action continues as The Lady Patriots travel to Kansas to face the Newman University Jets on Saturday, November 1, 2008, at 7:00 p.m.
