Patriot Bats Come Alive in 13-2 Victory Over NIU

Box Score

The Patriots improved to 4-0 on the season at home with their 13-2 victory over Northern Illinois on Friday night.  DBU, who is now 11-4, used a four run seventh and five run eighth to pull away from the Huskies, who fell to 3-10.

The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off a two out solo home run by shortstop, Bobby Stevens.

DBU tied the score in the bottom of the first inning after Sophomore Ryan Enos led off with a walk, stole second base, and advanced to third base on a wild pitch.  Sophomore Austin Knight drove in Enos on a sacrifice fly to center field, which made the score 1-1.

The Patriots scored one run in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead.  DBU loaded the bases after Junior Clay Kelly singled, advanced to third on a single by Enos, and Knight walked.  Bigley then hit an RBI fielder's choice ground ball to score Kelly.

NIU made the score 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning when Justin Behm walked and then scored on a double to the right centerfield gap by Joe Buonavolanto.

Kelly and Enos led off the bottom of the fifth with walks and then a sacrifice bunt by Knight advanced the base runners into scoring position.  Bigley hit an RBI ground out to second base, which allowed Kelly to score and a wild pitch scored Enos, giving DBU a 4-2 lead heading into the sixth.

Junior Trevor Head hit a two run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to extend the Patriots lead to 6-2.  After Head's home run the Patriots managed two more runs on three singles and two walks, which gave them an 8-2 advantage.

DBU started off the bottom of the eighth inning with four consecutive walks and then with the bases loaded, Bantz hit a two RBI double down the left field line.  With Bantz on second and Pirtle on third base Sophomore Ryan Thompson drove them in with a single up the middle, to make the score 13-2.

Junior Chris McMullen picked up his second victory of the season after he pitched 6.2 innings allowing two runs on four hits and striking out one.

Kelly went two for two, with two walks, and one run scored to lead the Patriots at the plate, while Goins was two for four with one RBI.  Bantz also went two for four, with two RBI and two runs scored.

The Patriots will look to wrap the series sweep on Saturday at 1:00 when they take on NIU at Patriot Field.
