Bigley's Homerun Secures Victory for Patriots

Box Score

DBU Junior Evan Bigley hit a two run homerun in the top of the seventh inning to give the Patriots a 4-3 advantage over the Memphis Tigers on Friday night.  Senior Tyson Bagley entered the game in the seventh inning and worked his way to his eighth save of the season, which secured the victory for the Patriots.

The 4-3 victory improved the Patriots record to 24-10, while Memphis fell to 15-22.  Senior Wayne Dowling picked up the victory for DBU by pitching 1.1 innings, allowing two unearned runs, and two hits, while Sophomore Ryan Milliard had a strong start for DBU.  Millard threw 5.0 innings, scattering five hits, and giving up one earned run.

Memphis scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning by connecting on three consecutive singles with two outs.  The Tigers took a 1-0 advantage into the third inning.

The Patriots tied the score in the top of the third inning after Senior Clay Kelly reached base on an error and advanced to third base on a single by Sophomore Ryan Enos.  Sophomore Ryan Goins drove in Kelly on a ground out to second base.

DBU took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Senior Drew Pirtle led off with a double and scored the go ahead run on an RBI single by Senior Nick Santos.

The Tigers regained the lead from DBU in the bottom of the sixth inning after an error by the Patriots allowed runners to advance to second and third base with no outs.  Two ground outs by the Tigers allowed for each base runner to score, which gave Memphis a 3-2 lead.  The Tigers were only able to hold the lead for half an inning because of Bigley's two run homerun in the top of the seventh inning.

Memphis loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning with one out but a game ending double play secured the victory for DBU.  Bagley fielded a ground ball, threw home for the first out, and then DBU's catcher Junior Brandon Bantz threw out the base runner at first base to complete the untraditional double play.

Santos led the way at the plate for the Patriots going three for four with an RBI, while Bigley finished his night one for four, with two RBI, and a run scored.

The Tigers and Patriots will wrap up their three game series on Saturday afternoon when they play a double header starting at 1:00.
