The Lady Patriot Soccer team kicked off their 2008 season with a tough loss to the University of Central Oklahoma Broncos. The Broncos scored two early goals in the first half and played hard nose defense the rest of the match to secure their second victory of the season. With the loss, DBU fell to 0-1, while UCO improved to 2-0.
With 30 minutes, left in the first half UCO scored on a crossing pass from the left side, which allowed Katy Kashwer to deflect it over the top of the Lady Patriots goalies head. The Broncos went up 2-0 four minutes later after they scored the winning goal on a ball that deflected off the goalie.
DBU cut the lead to 2-1 to put some pressure on the Broncos in the 34th minute of the match, after Freshman Brittany Layne struck a perfect pass to the head of Junior Sarah Meierhofer, who directed it into the corner of the goal.
Defense proved to be the difference for the rest of the game with both teams having chances to score, but great play from the defenders and each goalie kept the game scoreless throughout the rest of the contest.
The Lady Patriots will be in action again on Monday, September 1, when they play host to Texas A&M Commerce, for a 7:00 match.
