DBU Soccer Starts Conference Play Off with a 3-0 Shutout Over St. Mary's

The Lady Patriot Soccer Team started Heartland Conference play off with a 3-0 victory over St. Mary's University on Thursday afternoon at Patriot Field.  The Lady Patriots used two goals in the first half and added an insurance goal late in the match to secure the victory.  The win improved the Patriots record to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while the Rattlers fell to 0-4 and 0-1.

Freshman standout Brittany Layne started the scoring off when she dribbled through traffic and drove goal striking ball off the goalies hand.  The goal was Layne's third of the year, which is a team high.

The Lady Patriots pushed their lead to 2-0 after Senior Kim Wepler lined up a free kick from 45 yards and perfectly placed the shot on goal right over the top of the goalies head.  Wepler's goal was the first of the year for her.

The goal that closed the door on the Rattlers came late in the match after Sophomore Ally Bales lined up a free kick from about 15 yards out.  Bales smashed the ball off of one of the Rattlers defenders which allowed it to bypass the goalies hands.

DBU's defense played outstanding once again, giving the Lady Patriots their second straight shut out.  St. Mary's managed nine shots on goal.  The combination of Juniors Haley Corbell and Emily Evans locked things down in goal for the Lady Patriots.

The Patriots will look for their third straight victory on Saturday afternoon when they play the UTPB.  The match is scheduled for 2:00 in Odessa, Texas.
