Lady Patriots Shut Out ASU to Pick Up First Victory of Season

The Lady Patriot Soccer Team picked up their first victory of the season on Friday night at Patriot field after they knocked off Angelo State, 1-0.  The victory not only gave the team their first victory but the first victory of Head Coach Michelle Lenard's coaching career.  DBU is now 1-2, while ASU fell to 1-2.

The first half was a defensive struggle with DBU managing to fire off four shots, while ASU only had one shot.  The Lady Patriots defensive intensity from the start of the game continued throughout the entire contest, which allowed Junior goalie Haley Corbell to relax in goal and save the only two shots fired at her during the match.

The second half started off with each team continuing their defensive stands, until the 74th minute when the Lady Patriots managed to break through the wall.  Freshman standout Brittany Layne received a pass from fellow Freshman Kourtney Edwards, with control of the ball in the box; Layne quickly turned around and smashed a shot into the upper left corner of the net.

The goal proved to be all the Lady Patriots needed, as they were able to shut down ASU for the final 16 minutes to achieve their first shutout of the season.  DBU did manage nine shots on goal, while ASU was only able to fire off five shots.

DBU will look for their second victory of the season on September 11, when they welcome St. Mary's University to Patriot Field.  The 4:00 match will kick off Heartland Conference play for each team.
