The Dallas Baptist University Patriot Baseball team defeated the Louisiana Tech University Bulldogs on Thursday evening by the score of 14-12 at Patriot Field. With the victory, the Patriots improve to 13-7, while the Bulldogs fall to 12-7.
Junior Ryan Millard pitched six and two-third innings, allowing four runs on five hits, striking out six, picking up the win and improving to 2-2 on the season.
Leading the Patriots at the plate was Junior Ryan Enos, who went three for four with five RBI and Junior Ryan Goins, who went three for three.
The Patriots struck first, scoring one run in the bottom of the third inning, to take an early 1-0 lead. Enos reached first after being hit by a pitch to start the inning and advanced to second on a groundout by Junior Austin Knight. Enos stole third and scored on a RBI groundout by Senior Trevor Head.
Millard held the Bulldogs hitless until the fifth inning, when Chris Kersten hit a solo homerun to left field to tie the game, 1-1.
Enos responded with a solo homerun of his own to lead off the bottom of the fifth, his 10th of the year. Knight and Goins followed with singles, which set up a three-run homerun by Head, his eighth of the season. Sophomore Jason Krizan and Juniors Travis Meiners and Ryan Thompson added singles, which set up back to back two RBI doubles by Senior Clay Kelly and Enos, leaving the score 9-1.
Louisiana Tech managed three runs off of Millard in the sixth inning, off a single, a double and a two-run homerun, leaving the score 9-4.
Senior Brandon Bantz hit his fourth homerun of the season, scoring Thompson, increasing the Patriot lead to 11-4.
The Bulldogs added another run in the top of the eighth, before the Patriots added three more runs in the bottom half of the inning. Thompson tripled then Bantz and pinch hitter Freshman Ryan Behmanesh walked to load the bases. Enos added a two RBI double and another run scored on a RBI groundout by Knight, to give the Patriots a 14-5 lead.
Louisiana Tech managed to make the game close, scoring seven runs off of DBU relievers Sophomore Josh Wilson and Junior Bret Wade, before Sophomore Chris Haney closed the door, picking up his third save of the year to leave the final score, 14-12.
The Patriots are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they welcome back the Bulldogs to Patriot Field for the second game of the three game series. The first pitch is slated for 3:00 p.m.
