Patriots Split Double Header with Huskies

The Dallas Baptist University Patriots Baseball Team split the double header against the Northeastern University Huskies on Friday. The Patriots move to 22-9 on the year, while the Huskies move to 16-11. The Patriots defeated the Huskies in game one in convincing fashion, 12-2, but dropped the second game, 7-5.

Starting pitcher Junior Ryan Millard picked up the win improving to 4-2 on the season. Millard pitched seven innings allowing only two runs on eight hits, while striking out 10 Husky batters. Freshman Michael Smith and Senior Kevin Aduddell each pitched one scoreless inning in relief to finish off the Huskies.

Leading the Patriots at the plate in game one was Junior Ryan Goins who went 2 for 3, hitting one homerun and one single. Goins also had one walk in the win.

In the bottom of the first inning Junior Ryan Goins gave the Patriots the early lead by crushing a solo homerun over the right field wall leaving the score, 1-0.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Huskies managed one run off of Millard to tie the game, and then took the lead in the top of the sixth scoring another leaving the score, 2-1.

The Patriots responded in the bottom of the sixth inning putting five runs on the board. Junior Ryan Enos led off the inning with a walk, before Junior Travis Meiners advanced him to third on a single to right field, leaving runners on first and third. Goins stepped up to the plate and hit a RBI single to right field, scoring Enos to tie the game, 2-2. Senior Trevor Head doubled to left field, scoring Meiners on the play to give the Patriots the 3-2 lead. DBU continued to add to their lead when Junior Ryan Thompson crushed a two RBI double to left field, scoring Goins and Head. Thompson was pushed across the plate for the fifth run of the inning by a Sophomore Chris Haney sacrifice fly to leave the score 6-2.

The Patriots extended their lead in the bottom of the seventh inning scoring six runs and leaving the score 12-2. Enos reached first after being hit by a pitch, and then advanced to second on a Meiners single to left field. Goins walked to load the bases and set up for a Head two RBI double, scoring Meiners and Enos and giving the Patriots a victory in game one.

Smith and Aduddell pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to finish off the Huskies 12-2.

In game two, starting pitcher Freshman Ben Palmer pitched five innings allowing four runs on six hits, while striking out one Husky batter. Junior Michael LaCourse was stuck with the loss falling to 1-1 on the season. LaCourse pitched two thirds innings giving up three runs on four hits. Sophomore Chris Haney pitched three and one third scoreless innings in relief to end the game.

The Patriots were led at the plate in the second game by Enos who went 3 for 4 in the game. Enos hit one double and two singles in the loss.

The Huskies took the lead early in the second game scoring one run in the top of the first inning off of Palmer leaving the score, 1-0.

The Patriots were kept scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when they added a single run to tie the game, 1-1. Enos doubled to left center to reach, then Meiners pushed Enos across the plate on a RBI single to center field.

Northeastern responded in the top of the sixth inning scoring six runs on the Patriot defense.

The Patriots answered in the bottom of the sixth scoring two runs, and added a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, leaving the score 7-5. Krizan scored on a RBI single by Bantz in the sixth, after reaching on a single and advancing to third on a Head double. Knight hit a sacrifice fly to score Thompson for the second run in the sixth inning.

In the seventh, Goins reached base on a double to left field, before scoring from a Krizan single to right field. Thompson stepped up and crushed a triple to left field to score Krizan and leave the score 7-5.

The Patriots could not produce enough offense to get any runs on the board in the eighth and ninth innings as they Huskies captured the victory, 7-5.

The Patriots are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they welcome back the Northeastern Huskies to Patriot Field for the third and final game of the weekend series. The first pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
