Lady Patriot Soccer Opens Season with 4-2 Win

The Lady Patriots Soccer Team opened up 2009 season on Friday night at Patriot Field as they defeated the Texas Woman's University Pioneers by the score of 4-2 to start the season with a 1-0 record.

The Lady Patriots started quickly as they put in an early goal when Sophomore Brittany Layne hit a volley  from a cross from Junior Chelsea Smith.

The Pioneers answered, tying up the game 1-1 when Dani DeCoursin scored from a Chasity Hayter assist.

Sophomore Hope Adams broke the tie only one minute into the second half as she slipped through the TWU defense and hit a strong shot just past the TWU goal keeper giving the Lady Patriots the 2-1 lead.

Senior Sarah Meierhofer added to the Lady Patriot lead before Freshman Lindsay Cox stepped in as a substitute to score her first collegiate goal as a Lady Patriot to extend the lead to 4-1.

The Pioneers took advantage of a penalty kick they were awarded from a hard foul by the Lady Patriots to leave the score 4-2 with only 23 minutes left in the game.

The defense held strong for the Lady Patriots as they held off the TWU attack to capture their first win of the season in the home opener by the score of 4-2.

The Lady Patriots are back in action on Tuesday, September 1, as they travel to Commerce, Texas, to play Texas A&M University-Commerce.  Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
