Patriots Fall to Aggies

The Dallas Baptist University Patriots were unable to overcome a rough shooting night as they fell to the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies, 70-67. The Patriots (7-5) are now 2-1 in Heartland Conference play after starting off with two, hard-fought road wins against St. Edwards and Texas A&M International earlier this week.

Junior Braxton Adamson got the night started with three 3-pointers in the opening five minutes to give DBU a 13-10 lead, but a jumper by the Aggies' Stephen Colvin knotted the game at 13 a minute later. Dallas Baptist led by as much as 11 in the first half, but the Aggies used an 18-8 run over the final 9:20 to take a 38-36 lead at the break.

The Patriots' shooting woes started in the second half, much in part due to OPSU center, Stephen Colvin. Colvin blocked three shots and altered numerous others as he used his 7'0” frame to bolster an Aggie defense that held the Patriots to 30 percent shooting. As DBU struggled to score, OPSU guard Marcale Marshall connected on three consecutive jumpers to give the Aggies a 55-49 lead at the 8:23 mark.

Another jumper by Marshall gave the Aggies a 66-57 advantage before DBU Junior Jared Whitmire provided some relief for the struggling Patriot offense. Whitmire connected on two 3-pointers in the final two minutes, cutting the DBU deficit to three with 33 seconds remaining. A missed free throw by OPSU guard Trayvon Williams left the Patriots with one last chance. However, Sophomore Junior McGowen's half-court attempt as time expired was off the mark, as the Patriots suffered their first conference loss of the season, 70-67.

The Aggies had four players in double figures, with Williams leading the way with 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Senior Eddie Gloviak posted a double-double for the Patriots with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while McGowen led all scorers with 18 on the night.

The Patriots are back in action Saturday, January 8, as they host UT-Permian Basin. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00.
