Patriots Complete Three Game Sweep Against Leopards

The Patriots continued their three game series against the Lafayette Leopards with a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Patriots completed the series sweep of the Leopards winning 14-13 in the first game of the afternoon and 16-4 in the second game. With the wins, the Patriots are now 13-7 on the season.

Junior Chris Haney picked up the win for the Patriots in the first game after pitching five innings, and giving up seven earned runs on eight hits, and striking out six.

In the opening game, the Leopards scored four runs in the top of the first, but Junior Jason Krizan responded for the Patriots with a solo homerun in the bottom of the inning to trim the Leopard lead to three.  Sophomore Ryan Behmanesh followed with a RBI single to make it a 4-2 game.

After a scoreless second for the Leopards, the Patriot bats came alive in the bottom of the inning as they strung together 10 hits to score 11 runs, taking a commanding 13-4 lead. Senior Ryan Enos hit his fifth homerun of the season, a three run shot over the left field wall, and Krizan followed with his second homerun of the afternoon to make it a 13-4 lead.

Lafayette's Adam McMahon homered to lead off the third and Matt Fenster scored on a DBU error to make it a 13-6 game.

Freshman Austin Elkins brought Freshman Duncan McAlpine across the plate with his sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning, increasing the DBU lead to eight.

The Leopards rallied in the sixth, as they scored three runs on five hits including back-to-back homeruns by Alex Betcha and A.J. Miller, chasing Haney from the mound. The Leopards' hot hitting continued in the seventh and eighth, as they scored four more runs, cutting the DBU lead to one, 14-13.

After Kevin Casey flied out to right field, Behmanesh struck out two to end the inning, and seal the 14-13 win for the Patriots.

DBU Freshman Will Lane pitched seven innings in game two, picking up his first win of the season. Lane only allowed three runs on nine hits, and struck out five.

The Leopards were first on the scoreboard again in the second game, scoring two runs after hitting three consecutive doubles. The Leopard lead didn't last long as the Patriots used three hits to score five runs in the bottom of the inning. Behmanesh picked up an RBI single followed by a three run homerun by Elkins to give the Patriots a 5-2 lead.

Lafayette only managed to score one run in the fourth, and the Patriots tacked on six total runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Krizan hit his third homerun of the night, scoring Robbins and Enos who had each reached on a single. Knight connected on a three run shot of his own in the fifth scoring Elkins and Behmanesh, and making it an 11-3 lead for the Patriots.

The Patriots capped off the evening with three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth, while only allowing one run by the Leopards in the top of the ninth, earning the 16-4 win.

The Patriots will be back in action on March 19, as they welcome the fourth-ranked TCU Horned Frogs to Patriot Field. The first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
