DBU Soccer Drops Heartland Conference Opener Against Hilltoppers

The Dallas Baptist Lady Patriot Soccer Team lost their first Heartland Conference game of the season on Thursday night, falling to St. Edward's University, 1-2. The Lady Patriots are now 2-6 overall on the season.

Dallas Baptist almost took a 1-0 lead in the first half, but Senior Chelsea Smith's shot at the 20:24 mark bounced off the post. DBU held a six to four shot advantage at the break, but the teams headed to halftime, tied 0-0.

The game remained scoreless until the 51:03 mark in the second half. Hilltopper Rachel Murray found an open shot off an SEU corner kick, and sent it past DBU goalkeeper, Senior Haley Corbell, for a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, Bethany Bennett scored the second SEU goal of the night, with her header off yet another Hilltopper corner kick.

DBU Senior Ally Bales drew a penalty kick with ten minutes left in the game, after a handball was called on SEU in their goal box. Bales sent her ensuing penalty kick past the Hilltopper goalie, to pull the Lady Patriots to within one, and gave Bales her fourth goal of the season.

The Lady Patriots will take a week off before heading to San Antonio on October 7. DBU will face St. Mary's University in a 3:00 p.m. game.
