Senior
Braxton Adamson, DBU's all-time leading scorer, scored a game-high 26 points in his final home game as a Patriot, leading DBU to a 96-78 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State. Adamson shot 8-for-10 from the field and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, as the Patriots finish out the regular season 14-12, and 6-6 in the Heartland Conference.
After a slow start that saw the Patriots down 11 midway through the first half, DBU rallied over the next two minutes, closing the deficit to just four points, 20-24, with 9:58 left.
OPSU pushed their lead back to nine a minute later, but DBU outscored the Aggies, 25-10, over the final ten minutes to take a four-point lead at the break. Junior
Ishmael Awange's jumper sparked the Patriot offense as they closed out the opening period, scoring 10 unanswered to take a 38-34 halftime lead.
The Patriot offense continued to roll in the second, as they quickly opened up a double-digit lead thanks to a jumper from Junior
Armie Lewis. Adamson connected on a jumper with 14:46 remaining, followed by a three-pointer less than a minute later to give DBU a commanding, 56-41 lead.
Adamson gave DBU their largest lead of the night, 70-48, after being fouled and draining a pair of free throws at the 10:30 mark.
OPSU managed to cut their deficit to 10 with 3:55 left, but that is as close as they would get.
After Adamson connected on two more free throws to push the lead back to 18 with just over a minute to play, the senior was subbed out of the game, resulting in a standing ovation from Patriot fans. Adamson wrapped up his career at the Burg Center as the all-time leading scorer in DBU history, finishing with 1,805 points.
A few seconds later, the crowd rose to their feet again as Senior
Jared Whitmire exited the game for the final time. Along with Adamson, Whitmire was a member of the 2008-2009 squad that made it to the NCAA Regional Semi-Finals.
After the Patriots wrapped up the 96-78 win, Adamson, Whitmire, and fellow Senior
Michael Andrews were honored for their commitment and dedication to the Patriot Basketball Program.
McGowen and Sophomore
Nick Fox rounded out the scoring for the Patriots, both finishing with 20 points.
After picking up the win over OPSU, the Patriots needed St. Mary's University to defeat Texas A&M International on Saturday evening, for a chance to make it to the Heartland Conference Tournament. Unfortunately, the Rattlers defeated TAMIU to pick up the conference's last spot in the tournament.
The Patriots will now wait for their seeding in the NCCAA Tournament, set to begin on March 10.
