The Dallas Baptist Patriot Basketball Team shot an astonishing 39-of-42 from the free throw line en route to an 84-76 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Thursday evening. The Patriots made 11 more free throws than the Aggies attempted on the night, led by Sophomore
Nick Fox who finished a perfect 12-for-12. With the win, the Patriots improve to 11-8 overall and 3-3 in the Heartland Conference.
Three players from Panhandle State fouled out in the game, including two starters, one of whom was disqualified with over six minutes remaining. The Patriot game plan of attacking the basket was evident in the fact that they only attempted 11 three-pointers on the night. Coming into the game, DBU was averaging over 16 attempts per game.
The first half featured 11 lead changes and 10 ties, but it was DBU who took the narrow lead at halftime. The Patriots closed out the half with back-to-back buckets, courtesy of Fox and Junior
Jordan McGowen, to take a 36-33 lead to the locker room.
Junior T.J. Clark got things started in the second half for the Patriots, as he knocked down two consecutive jumpers, spurring an 8-2 run for DBU. Clark capped off the run three minutes later with a pair of free throws, giving DBU a 46-35 lead with 16:46 left.
Fox gave the Patriots their biggest lead of the night, when his jumper gave DBU a 60-45 advantage with 13:08 left on the clock.
OPSU battled back over the next ten minutes, managing to trim the DBU lead to only three points with 2:24 left in the game. After an Aggie jumper that made it 69-72 in favor of DBU, Senior
Braxton Adamson responded for the Patriots with his second three-pointer of the night, pushing the lead back to six.
A pair of jumpers from Fox and four consecutive free throws by McGowen and Junior
Armie Lewis, held off the Aggie comeback attempt, and handed DBU their third Heartland Conference victory.
Fox led all scorers in the game with 31 points, while Adamson followed with 15. McGowen and Clark chipped in 12 points apiece for the Patriots.
DBU will travel to Wichita, Kansas on Saturday, for a rematch against Newman University. The Patriots fell to the Jets, 78-84, back on January 24. Game time on Saturday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
