Patriots Knock Off Sam Houston State with 5-3 Win

The Dallas Baptist Patriot Baseball Team defeated Sam Houston State University on Tuesday evening at Patriot Field, defeating the Bearkats 5-3. DBU improves to 15-9 on the season while the Bearkats drop to 17-8.

Junior Michael Smith picked up his first win of the season after pitching two and a third innings and giving up only one hit and no earned runs.  Senior Chris Haney earned his eighth save of the season after coming on in the ninth, allowing only one hit, and striking out one.

The Bearkats took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, scoring on a RBI single by Doug Oney.

After three scoreless innings for the Patriots, DBU finally evened the game with their first run of the night in the fourth. A leadoff single by Senior Jason Krizan and a walk by Junior Ryan Behmanesh resulted in two on with no outs for the Patriots. After a pop out from Junior Joel Hutter, Krizan advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt at first, and later scored on a RBI single from Junior Kenny Hatcher, tying the game at one run apiece.

DBU took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth, after Senior Josh Wilson scored on a Bearkat error.

Sam Houston recaptured the lead in the seventh after notching one run in the sixth and one in the top half of the seventh, but the Patriots responded once again in the eighth.

With two outs Sophomore Duncan McAlpine reached on a single and advanced to second after a walk by Freshman K.J. Alexander. Wilson followed with a double to left field, scoring both runners, and giving the Patriots a 4-3 advantage. A single by Junior Landon Anderson the next at bat, scored Wilson for the final run of the game, giving DBU the 5-3 win.

Up next for the Patriots is a three-game road trip to Houston where they will face Houston Baptist University. The first game of the series is scheduled for Thursday, March 31 at 2:00 p.m.
