Patriots Outlast Sooners to Pick Up First-Ever NCAA Tournament Victory, 3-2

The third-seeded DBU Patriots opened up play in the NCAA Fort Worth Regional Tournament with a 3-2 victory over the second-seeded Sooners from Oklahoma on Friday afternoon at Lupton Stadium. With the win, the Patriots improve to 40-17.

Starting pitcher Brandon Williamson improved to 10-3 on the year after throwing nine innings, allowing only two earned runs on seven hits, and striking out seven.

The Patriots got off to a hot start in the top of first inning as Junior Landon Anderson doubled on a shot to the right-center gap. Senior Jason Krizan the brought home the fisrt run of the night with his shot down the right field line, recording his NCAA-leading, 38th double of the season to give the Patriots an early 1-0 lead.

The Sooners struck back in the bottom of the fifth inning as Williamson allowed one run on two hits and leveled the game at 1-1. After Senior Tyler Robbins advanced to first on a hit-by-pitch in the top of the sixth inning, Senior Joel Hutter slapped a two-out single as Robbins advanced to second base. The Patriots were unable to record any runs in the top of sixth as Junior Ryan Behmanesh popped-out to end the inning.

Williamson pitched himself out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth inning as he struck out Oklahoma Sooner, Max White to end the inning. The Sooners recorded two base hits to leave two men on base.

Sophomore Duncan McAlpine led the Patriots off in the top of the seventh inning as he singled up the middle to record his 46th hit of the season. The Patriots were unable to score McAlpine as Senior Josh Wilson grounded out to the shortstop to end the inning.

The Sooners came out swinging in the bottom of the seventh inning as Tyler Ogle singled to right field to drive in a run, giving the Sooners a 2-1 outright lead. The Patriots were unable to post a run in the top of the eighth inning as the Sooner pitching staff maintained their stellar performance.

With the score remaining 2-1 in top of the ninth inning, Ryan Behmanesh led off for the Patriots with a single to left field. Shortly after, McAlpine laid down a sacrifice bunt that advanced Behmanesh to second. With two outs and one man on, Sophomore Austin Elkins hit a rope to right field that scored Behmanesh, tying the game 2-2. Elkins was thrown out at second base to end the inning and send the game in to extra innings.

The Patriots came out hot in the top of the 10th inning as Senior Chris Haney singled to first on a lead-off bunt. Tyler Robbins soon followed with a bunt of his own and reached first as the Sooner pitcher gunned Haney out at second base. With one out and Robbins on first base, Junior Landon Anderson hit a shot to right field, advancing Robbins to third base. One batter later, Krizan singled to shortstop to score Robbins from third base, giving the Patriots a 3-2 lead. With two runners on, Behmanesh grounded in to a double play to end the top half of the inning.

The Patriots brought in their trusty closer, Haney, to finish off the Sooners in the bottom half of the tenth. Haney struck out the final batter of the game to pick up his 13th save on the season.

The Patriots will continue Regional action with game two on Saturday, June 4, at 7:00 p.m. at Lupton Stadium. They will face TCU after the Horned Frogs defeated Oral Roberts, 10-2, in the Friday evening game.
