The Lady Patriots traveled to Warrensburg, Missouri, to face #8 Central Missouri Thursday night. The right foot of
Jake Cox and the goaltending of
Kerry Edwards made it a worthwhile trip.
After a scoreless first half that saw Edwards make three saves on eight shots, Cox capitalized in the 57th minute on a Central Missouri foul from about 25 yards out. Her first goal of the season put the Lady Patriots ahead, 1-0, and it was all Edwards from there.
On the night, Central Missouri pounded 20 shots only to see Edwards make the necessary eight saves to record her second straight shutout. Going back to the overtime tie against Texas Woman's University that saw TWU score in the second minute, DBU has not allowed a goal in the last 288 minutes of play.
"Although the statistics may not look like it, we actually had several other good chances to score. We forced them to take shots from long range and off balance. They came on strong in the end sending lots of players forward but we stayed organized and disciplined and with a couple big saves from our freshman goalkeeper,
Kerry Edwards, we were able to secure the win," said Head Coach
Michelle Lenard after the game. "
Andrea Hutchins led our defense to one of the biggest shutouts in our program's history. She had an excellent game tonight. They pushed us hard at the end but I really feel like our team deserved to win tonight."
"I'm very proud of what our team was able to do tonight. The University of Central Missouri is a very good team and playing them at home is a very difficult task. We had players rise to the occasion in many different positions and many of those players were freshmen. This is a great win for our team and our program and I hope we can continue to build on this success."
Their next chance will come Saturday as they stay in Warrensburg to face Washburn University at noon.
