Dallas Baptist (34-16) scored a single run with two outs in the ninth to avoid consecutive shutouts for the first time since 1983. Creighton (21-23) scored a single run in the fourth and three in the sixth to win the first game of the three-game series, 4-1, with
Taylor Massey (7-4) picking up the loss for DBU and Ty Blach (5-5) throwing a complete, five-hit game for the Bluejays.
DBU had a chance to tie the score at one in the fifth inning after
Duncan McAlpine doubled to lead off the inning but he was stranded at third after a sacrifice bunt, a pop up in the infield, and a strikeout. Creighton scored three in the sixth the put the game away with two runs coming on a Scott Thornburg triple to right center after Massey had been replaced by
Michael Smith.
Patrick Hicks finished the game for DBU with two innings of scoreless baseball while the Patriots avoided a second straight shutout when
Ryan Behmanesh scored on a popup off the bat of
Jaime Garrido that was dropped in the Bluejay infield with two outs.
DBU and Creighton will square off again Saturday night with
