DALLAS – The Dallas Baptist Men's Soccer Team dropped a high shooting affair Saturday afternoon verses Ouachita Baptist 3-2. The Patriots (3-6) shattered a team record 28 shot attempts this season, and also broke a team-high nine shots on goal. However, OBU (3-6-1) matched nine shots on goal and came through with three goals to edge the Patriots.
Things got off to a quick start for both teams getting good looks at the goal. At the 3:50 minute mark, Jared Carlin scored from Sewell Yost to put the Tigers up 1-0.
Sophomore
Brian Robertson got DBU back even in the 13
th minute with a free kick that beat the goalie to the left side. The native of Midlothian, Texas extended his team-leading fifth goal by using a sneaky maneuver of catching the defense off guard. The forward kicked the shot before they could set up completely.
OBU jumped back ahead at the 19:28 mark off a Ryan Trayner goal, which took a crazy spin on a cross pass and bounced into the left side of the net. The score was Trayner's second on the year.
Despite the Patriots holding a 17-7 advantage on shot attempts in the first half, OBU controlled the game with a 2-1 halftime lead.
The first ten minutes of the second half started out sluggish for both teams. In the 56
th minute, DBU got ahold of some slight momentum as
Cameron Gilbert notched his first career goal to tie the contest 2-2. The Burleson, Texas, native placed the ball on the bottom right side of the net, with the pass coming from sophomore
Matthew Buckwalter.
It was OBU's Brandon Horn that scored the eventual game-winner with a header goal at the 64:33 mark for his second season goal.
Another double-digit shooting half for the Patriot's offense was not enough to overcome the deficit. Several opportunities presented themselves, but DBU could not respond with an answer to overcome the deficit.
A key player hindering DBU's chances in this game was David Henley (3-6-1). The Tiger's goalie allowed two goals, but came up with seven huge saves in the victory.
The Patriots were led in their record-breaking contest by senior
Rodrigo Barrientos and Robertson with five shot attempts. Lassiter contributed with four attempts, and freshmen duo
Seth Elliott and
Brandon O'Donovan added three. Freshman
Gerson Mendoza and Buckwalter rounded out the Patriot players recording multi-shot games with two each. Barrientos was the lone Patriot to tally a multi-shot on goal game with two.
Returning for the first time in three games due to injury, sophomore
Chuck Schober (2-5) took a tough loss allowing three goals in 90 minutes. The McKinney, Texas, native pulled in four saves in the close match. DBU as a team came up big with two team saves that kept OBU from pulling ahead further.
"We had a few positives from today's game match, and saw some areas we need to keep working on," Head Coach
Chris Crawford stated. "It was a tough game for the guys. We have to do a better job in starting the game with the right intensity."
The Patriots have dropped two difficult contests in a row, after taking back-to-back matches from McMurry. The Men's Soccer Team has still battled tough with Saturday's contest counting towards DBU's sixth one-goal differential match.
Crawford concluded, "The guy's look forward to getting back to conference on Monday."
Dallas Baptist is in the midst of a six game home stretch. Conference play resumes on Monday for game two of the home stand against Oklahoma Christian at 4 pm.
