DALLAS – The Dallas Baptist Men's Soccer Team improved to 1-2 on its current six-game home stretch, and hopes to keep the momentum rolling against Texas A&M International. DBU (4-7, 2-2) also improves to .500 in Heartland Conference action after outlasting a tough St. Mary's team Saturday to finally end a three-game losing slide.
LAST TIME OUT – The Patriots were led by senior
Rodrigo Barrientos, with two goals and an assist to propel DBU over St. Mary's 3-1. Scoring for the first time since his game-winner at Harding University (9/5/13), the midfielder notched the first score in the 16
th minute to give DBU the lead.
The Carrollton, Texas, native picked up his first assist on a goal from freshman
Gerson Mendoza, which counted as the rookie's first career. Up 2-0 through halftime, Barrientos put the game out of reach in the 61
st minute with a header that came from Junior
David Balyeat.
The senior's five points in the game notched a career best, and matched a team-high set twice by sophomore
Brian Robertson in two contests versus McMurry a few weeks ago.
Despite the Rattlers taking 32 shots, 31 faced by freshman
Mason Stringer in goal, the Patriots held them to only one goal, which came late in the second half with under 10 minutes remaining. The rookie keeper for DBU grabbed a career-high nine saves in his third start.
SCOUTING TEXAS A&M INTERNATIONAL – TAMIU (6-6-1, 4-1) is currently embarked on a six-game stretch of its own, but on the road. Currently the Dustdevils are 2-1 with two wins in a row by the same score of 2-1. In their most recent contest, Oklahoma Christian was defeated as Arturo Gutierrez and Camilo Botero scored in the victory.
TAMIU enters Monday's match in second place in the Heartland, behind the nationally ranked and undefeated St. Edward's University. The Dustdevils rank in the top three shot attempts, but DBU does hold an edge in scoring goals 20-19.
The Patriots went 0-2 versus TAMIU last season, but the loss in Dallas was a one-goal deficit 3-2. In this match, Balyeat scored the first goal and sophomore
Alex Becerra delivered a pass on the second goal. A late goal cost DBU at the end, but the Patriots were also outshot 19-9. Still, DBU placed five shots on goal, and current sophomore
Chuck Schober nabbed four saves in the net.
