Late Run Helps Patriots Earn First Win

Box Score

The Dallas Baptist Men's Basketball Team recorded its first win of the season in a 93-74 victory over Dallas Christian College at the Burg Center Wednesday night. Five Patriot players scored double-figures and a 53 point second half was enough to lift DBU (1-1) to a .500 record. Dallas Christian (0-4) has dropped four straight.

Once again sophomore Jonathan Perry posted a game-high 18 points to lead all scorers in the contest. He debuted on Saturday with 28 points, and continues pacing the Patriot's offense as the leading scorer through the first pair of games.

Junior Wesley Gipson provided a huge lift off the bench for DBU, matching a career best 17 points. Following the point guard in scoring was redshirt freshman Myles Johnson with 16. The Arlington, Texas, native and Perry duo have both notched double-digits in the first two contests on the season.

Sophomore Charles Allen added 14 points and tied a team-high four assists with teammate Jason Gentry. Rounding out the five double-digit scorers for the Patriots was senior Remy Ndiaye with 10. The forward tallied eight of his 10 total points in the second half.

DBU jumped out to a quick 5-0 advantage before the Crusaders got on the board with a three pointer from Chad Herring. The game remained even through the first five minutes before the Patriots opened a slight edge at 14-10.

Eight steals and 16 DCC turnovers aided Dallas Baptist to 18 points off turnovers in the first half. The Patriots led 40-30 at halftime.

A layup by junior Chris Strong pushed DBU's early second half lead to 46-32 and seemed the game was in control. The Crusaders cut the deficit to four after rattling off a 10-0 run with 14:18 remaining.

A free throw from Perry halted the run and sparked a 9-1 stretch to put the Patriots back with a double-digit advantage. The critical moment on the court occurred with 5:53 minutes remaining, when Ndiaye delivered a three pointer to shift the difference to 72-62 for DBU.

A 10-0 run by Dallas Baptist completely swung the momentum and concluded what was eventually a 53 point half. The largest lead of the night for the Patriots was 21.

The Crusaders had two players finish in double-digits on the night. Joshua Harris led the team with 17 points and Herring posted 15.

DBU shot 52-percent field goal percentage, compared to Dallas Christian finishing 48-percent. The Patriots held a slight edge in rebounding 34-32 and led 17-9 in steals.

A massive difference in points in the paint for DBU 62-24, and 18-2 on fast breaks was a difference-maker in the home team's first victory of the campaign.

Dallas Baptist takes to the road on Saturday at East Central for a 4 pm tip-off.
