Faced with the challenge of going on the road to take on a 5-0 Texas A&M Commerce team, the Dallas Baptist Men's Basketball Team gave the Tigers all they could handle in a 72-67 loss on Wednesday night. DBU (1-3) led by as many as 13, four minutes into the second half. TAMC would eventually tie the game with 4:15 remaining, before closing out the five-point win.
DBU held a Tigers team that averaged 93 points per game in check throughout the night with a heavy dose of zone defense. TAMC's leading scorer, LaDon Carnegie, who entered tonight averaging 18 points per game, was held to four points, before knocking down back-to-back threes at the four-minute mark of the second half. DBU was led by redshirt sophomore,
Jonathan Perry, who led all scorers with 21. Sophomore
Charles Allen, and redshirt freshman,
Myles Johnson, each finished in double-digits with 12 and 10 respectively. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Coming out of the locker room at the midway point with a 38-34 lead, the Patriots stormed out to a 13 point advantage in the first four-and-a-half minutes of the second half. Allen opened the scoring with a three-pointer from the corner. After a pair of free-throws from Perry, a layup by senior,
Remy Ndiaye, and a jumper from Johnson in the paint, DBU had their largest lead of the game.
The Tigers would not go away quietly, as they chipped away at the Patriot lead the rest of the way. Following a three from TAMC's De'Andre Carson, the DBU lead was cut to five with 13:50 left to play. The Patriots were able to extend the lead back to double-digits, after sophomore,
Jason Gentry, buried a three-point shot to put DBU back up by 11.
TAMC would respond with a 12-0 run to pull within one with 7:26 remaining. DBU extended the lead back to six before the Tigers tied the game at 61 on Carnegie's shot from beyond the arc. In a back-and-forth affair, the Patriots found themselves down five with 3:25 left to play, when they put together a 5-0 run of their own. When Perry connected on a shot in the lane and completed the three-point play at the free throw line, DBU retook a one point advantage with 1:53 remaining.
It would be the last lead of the night for the Patriots as Carnegie got a friendly roll on a jumper in the lane to give the lead back to TAMC at 68-67 with 60 seconds on the clock. After a pair of free throws from Kameron Price, who led the Tigers with 19 points, DBU trailed by three. Following their final timeout, Johnson's three-point attempt to tie the game was too strong and the Patriots were forced to foul. Christian Macauley's free-throws with two seconds iced the game for TAMC.
"I was proud of the effort our guys gave on the defensive end," said DBU Head Coach,
Blake Flickner. "We executed the game plan that we had, but just weren't able to finish it in the end. We'll get back to work and continue to improve, but I am encouraged by how hard our guys fought tonight"
DBU returns home on Saturday for a Homecoming contest versus Mid-American Christian. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm at the Burg Center.
