In one of the top performances in DBU basketball history,
Jonathan Perry poured in 47 points in leading the Patriots to an 89-80 win over visiting Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Perry's 47-point explosion breaks the single-game DBU scoring record, previously held by
Nick Fox, who tallied 41 points on Nov.23 of last year.
"We were thinking Jonathan (Perry) looked a lot like Dirk Nowitzki tonight," said DBU Head Coach
Blake Flickner jokingly following the win. "He was hitting shots from the post, at the top, from three, it was a great performance."
The Patriots started on a feverish pace, scoring 16 points in less than five minutes to open the contest. After extending their lead as high as 14, the Patriots took a 37-30 lead into the halftime break, led by Perry's 19 points.
DBU opened the second half faster than the first, posting a 17-2 run to start the frame, extending their lead to 54-32. That is the largest lead the Patriots would have, however, as the Savage Storm caught fire the rest of the half, shooting 10-of-16 from behind the arc and cutting the DBU lead to 77-73.
"We knew coming in that they were a good shooting team," added Flickner. "They really came out with the hot hand in the second half."
The Patriot defense locked things down in the final minutes, however, with the offense pitching in a couple of late baskets to pull away and complete the 89-80 victory. The win moves DBU to 3-3 on the season, handing the Savage Storm their first loss, now at 4-1.
Myles Johnson,
Charles Allen, and
Remy Ndiaye pitched in eight points each to solidify the DBU offensive attack.
Jason Gentry was solid at the point guard position, passing off seven assists.
Perry completed the double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds, six of them on the offensive side. The sophomore shot 75-percent from the field, knocking down 5-of-7 from behind the arc, as well as 12-of-14 from the free throw line. All totaled, the Patriots shot 52-percent, hitting 46-percent from three.
For the Savage Storm, John Balwigaire earned a team-high 21 points, followed by 18 each from Taylor Smaller and Quinton Threadgill. Threadgill led the second half charge, scoring all of his points in the second frame, including 5-of-7 from behind the arc.
The Patriots won the overall turnover battle, forcing 20, compared to just 12 freebies from the home club. Each team tallied 25 total rebounds.
DBU will take a short break for the Thanksgiving holiday, before making the short trip west to take on University of Texas-Arlington, Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
