Dallas Baptist Keeps Streak Alive to Advance to Conference Championship

Box Score

The Dallas Baptist Women's Soccer Team extended both its winning and shutout streak to eight games, after advancing to the Heartland Conference Finals by topping St. Mary's 4-0 on Thursday. The Patriots (12-5-1) notched a program best earlier this week with seven straight shutouts, and now have advanced their record during its season-long winning stretch. A pair of goals in both halves was more than enough for a tight defense that has not surrendered a goal in 739 minutes.

Sophomore Ashley Cox got the offense going in the first half, beating the keeper one-on-one after receiving a pass from junior Lea Sedwick to put the Patriots up 1-0 in the sixth minute of the game. It was Cox's eighth goal of the year, moving her alone into second on the team.

DBU collected another goal at the 32:56 mark by senior Danielle Presley. The Flower Mound, Texas, native was named Heartland Offensive Player of the Year earlier in the day. The forward's second chance shot that rebounded off the crossbar put the Patriots up 2-0 going into halftime.

Presley notched her fourth multi-goal match and extends her team-high in goals to 12 with a kick that placed the ball in the net at the 56:14 mark. Freshman Rebecca Kernen came up with the assist, and would be involved on the next score later in the contest.

A few minutes after a goalie change by the Rattlers, Kernen knocked in her second goal of the season in the 68th minute. Playing in her first tournament game, the forward hustled for a loose ball and tapped in past the keeper off the line.

Overall DBU finished with 17 shots in the shutout led by Kernen with four. Presley and Cox followed with three attempts and Sedwick added two. The Patriots were on their mark today, firing 12 shots on goals led by Kernen and Presley with three apiece. Sedwick also shot 1.000 percent on the day going two-for-two.

St. Mary's (8-9-1) didn't pressure the ball much only getting off three shots the entire game. Junior Kerry Edwards (12-5-1) picked up a save in the victory to move within 10 of reaching the 200th save mark. It is also the McKinney, Texas, native's 11th shutout to work this season and is one shy from matching a season-high.

Alyssa Taramona (7-9) surrendered three goals and nabbed six saves through 63:53 minutes of gameplay. Working the final 26:07 minutes of action was Paola Ostos. She allowed a goal and grabbed a save in the loss.

"We did what we needed to do today to get a shot at the Conference Championship," Head Coach Michelle Lenard stated. "The team has been playing well and hopes to ride that momentum into Saturday."

Dallas Baptist will meet the No.-1 seed and 13th nationally ranked St. Edward's University in the Heartland Conference Championship Game. The rivalry match-up is slated for Saturday at 1 pm.
