Eighth Inning Homerun Propels DBU to Series Win

Box Score

Dallas Baptist (20-16, 7-5) won its third WAC series this weekend as the Patriots  got a late offensive surge to hold off the Seattle Redhawks (12-22, 3-8) on Saturday at Horner Ballpark, 9-4. The Patriots held an early 4-1 advantage in the contest only to see the Redhawks claw their way back and tie the game at four in the top of the eighth inning. The bottom of the eighth was the decisive inning in the game, though, as DBU managed five runs in the frame, highlighted by a Chane Lynch two-run homerun with nobody out. Lynch finished the game with three hits and Boomer Collins, batting leadoff for the first time all season, collected four – including a double and a leadoff homerun in the first. Ronnie Mitchell and RJ Talamantes also had multi-hit days for DBU.

Two pitches into the bottom of the first inning, DBU jumped out to a one-run lead as Collins deposited the offering from Redhawk starter Skyler Genger over the leftfield fence for his sixth four bagger of the season. Seattle tied the score off DBU starter Cody Beam in the third before the Patriots scored three in the third and fourth innings combined. The two-run fourth was opened by a Lynch triple which was followed by singles from Talamantes, Collins and Mitchell.

The Redhawks tied the game late off Patriot relievers Joseph Shaw and and Michael Smith. Shaw allowed a two-run homerun in the fifth before being replaced by Paul Voelker, who threw 2.1 innings and did not allow a run on two hits and two walks.  Smith allowed a single run in the eighth to tie the game but was the recipient of the five run outburst in the bottom of the inning to put the game away. Smith threw a perfect ninth to pick up his fifth win on the season in a game that took two hours and thirty-seven minutes to play.

DBU will step away from conference play on Tuesday as they welcome Stephen F. Austin to Horner Ballpark. First pitch is set for 6:30 pm.
