Patriots Defeated in Season Opener Rematch

Box Score

CANYON, Texas – No. 14 Dallas Baptist women's soccer team came up short in the 2013 season opener against No. 9 Colorado School of Mines, dropping Thursday's afternoon contest 3-1. Falling in this rematch sets DBU on a two game losing streak dating back to the second round of last season's NCAA tournament, where the same foe defeated the Patriots. The women's soccer team entered that match on a season-high 14 game win streak.

DBU (0-1) fell behind early in the first half. Anna Evans got the Orediggers (0-1) on the board with her first goal of the season at the 8:09 minute. A few minutes later, the Patriots were victims to a ball bouncing into its own goal to give CSM the 2-0 advantage. This mishap occurred off a corner kick and at the 15:44 mark.

The first half remained quiet for the Patriots offensively. Goal Keeper Kerry Edwards kept DBU in the game picking up five saves in the half off 10 shot attempts by the Orediggers. The Patriots only fired off three of their eleven shots in the game in this frame. DBU trailing 2-0 was the halftime tally.

Momentum shifted in the second period. DBU outshot Colorado Mines eight to three and forced their goal keeper, Jayln Yates, into recording five of her eight saves that period. Sophomore forward, Lindsey Eccles, finally got the Patriots in the scoring column at the 56:48 mark with her first goal on the year. Ashley Cox picked up the assist.

Other than that goal, DBU couldn't find the back of the net despite placing nine shots on goal in the game. The Orediggers sealed the victory at 88:10 minute off a Bree Archuleta goal assisted by Kendra Bulawa. The duo recorded their first statistics of the season respectively.

"We got a slow start and just couldn't recover in time. CSM is a very good team and its great experience for us this early in the season," Head Coach Michelle Lenard stated. "We had our chances but just didn't capitalize. We will get better as a result and we'll bounce back on Saturday."

Yates (1-0) earned the win in the net, allowing one goal and nabbing eight saves. Her counterpart Kerry Edwards (0-1) had some tough luck, surrendering three goals and picking up seven saves in 90:00 minutes in the goal.

Offensively, Dallas Baptist was led by Cox with four shot attempts and her first assist for the loan goal. Eccles chipped in the only score for DBU, and was one for two in shot attempts.

CSM was paced by Evans in shot attempts with five. One of those shots found the back of the net and Archuleta was the other individual to pick a goal up going one for two.

Dallas Baptist faces another top 10 opponent on Saturday against No. 10 Metro State University at 12 pm.
