Game Preview: DBU vs. Oklahoma Christian

OPENING TIP – The Dallas Baptist Men's Basketball Team opens its longest home stand of the campaign with a five-game span at the Burg Center beginning this weekend. DBU will look to find the win column against Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at 2 PM. The Patriots (4-7, 1-3) have dropped four straight, including its last three versus Heartland Conference opponents.

LAST TIME ON THE HARDWOOD –  Concluding a brief two-game Heartland Conference road trip, the Patriots went cold once again in the second half and fell to preseason favorites, UA Fort Smith, 74-56 last Saturday. It was the lowest scoring output for DBU on the season, as the squad shot 37-percent from the field, but only recorded 21 points in the second frame.
 
Trailing 45-35 at halftime, the Patriots did draw to within six coming out of the break, but the Lions answered with a 10-0 run to go up by 16 at the 7:41 mark.
 
Redshirt sophomore, Jonathan Perry, posted his fifth team-high of the year with 15 points. Sophomore Charles Allen joined in scoring double figures by finishing right behind at 14. Redshirt freshman, Myles Johnson, added eight points, and junior, Chris Strong, pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
  
PLAYERS TO WATCH – Redshirt sophomore, Jonathan Perry has risen up as the leading scorer for the Men's Basketball Team. Through 11 games, the native of Kerrville, Texas has averaged 18.6 points per game (ppg).
 
His personal best came at home against Southeastern Oklahoma State, when the starting forward posted a school record 47 points leading DBU to an 89-80 victory. Perry has boasted double-digit scoring affairs in nine of the team's 11 contests this year. He has broken the 20-point mark in three, including his historical night in program history. The second-year starter has poured in 496 career points, needing four to surpass to the 500-point plateau.
 
Allen has totaled double figures in scoring the past three games for the Patriots. He fell one-point shy of a personal best earlier this season, tallying 19 points in victory over East Central.
 
Senior, Remy Ndiaye, has notched career-highs twice this campaign, both occurring at the Burg Center. The Dakar, Senegal, native is averaging 12.1 ppg, and poured in a season-high in the last Heartland Conference contest against Texas-Permian Basin with 27.
 
HOME SWEET HOME – The friendly confines have been a bright spot for the Patriots this season as they have compiled a 4-3 record and posted the longest winning span on the campaign. DBU has averaged 80.5 points per game at the Burg Center. As a squad, the Patriots have scored a season best 93 points and shot 53-percent from the floor in a homecoming victory that also marked a season-high thus far.  The last Dallas Baptist triumph occurred at home when Heartland Conference Play opened against Lubbock Christian with a 61-59 nail-biter.

SCOUTING OKLAHOMA CHRISTIAN – The Eagles are still searching for their first conference win in the inaugural season of the Heartland  after falling to Rogers State 81-68 last weekend. OC (4-8, 0-4) has dropped five in a row, including its last four contests versus conference opponents.
 
In Saturday's setback, the Eagles staked a nine point lead before Rogers State rattled off 15 unanswered points in a five and a half minute stretch beginning around the halfway mark of the second frame. A basket by OC's John Moon with 6:56 remaining ended the scoring drought, but the Eagles trailed the rest of the way.
 
A quartet of Eagle players landed in double-digits scoring paced by Nick Tate with 19 for a team-high. Moon tallied 15 while Kendre Talley tossed in 13 points. Rounding out the group was Willie Harper adding 10.
 
Oklahoma Christian is 1-3 on the road so far this year. The squads faced each other twice last season with the Eagles claiming both affairs at each venue. At the Burg Center, DBU fell 66-63 after attempting to comeback in the second half.
 
Only trailing by seven coming out of the break, the Patriots had a chance to tie in the final seconds, but Perry's three-pointer would miss wide. Perry had 12 points while Allen chipped in 10 and grabbed a team best nine rebounds.  
 
HEARTLAND NUMBERS – DBU has gone 1-3 thus far in conference action, falling in the past three affairs. The Patriots claimed the Heartland Opener over Lubbock Christian 61-59.
 
The Men's Basketball Team is ranked in the top five for steals with 82 and sits fourth averaging 7.5 per game. This aids DBU's plus 2.82 turnover margin, which places the squad third in the league. Dallas Baptist has forced 15.9 while committing turnovers at a 13.1 clip.
 
OC is tied for second in the conference in block shots with 42 and averages 3.5 a game to claim third overall.
 
Some of the league's top scorers are featured in this match-up as DBU's Perry remains ranks third with 18.6 ppg. OC's, Talley, is third with 228 points and sits second averaging 19.0.
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE – Dallas Baptist continues conference play by hosting Newman on Jan. 16 at 7 PM. The lengthy home stand resumes Jan. 18 for a 2 PM match-up with Oklahoma Panhandle. Fans can view the Patriot Broadcast Network for all games, with pregame beginning 20 minutes prior to first tip.
