OPENING TIP – The Dallas Baptist Men's Basketball Team returns to the hardwood Saturday for a 2 PM contest versus Oklahoma Panhandle State University. This match-up marks the halfway point of a five-game home stand.
DBU (4-9, 1-5) has dropped its past five in Heartland Conference play and surpasses its longest losing skid since it dropped five-straight last year Jan. 3
rd through Jan. 19. The Men's Basketball Team has had success in the Burg Center, compiling all its victories in the confines to post a 4-5 record. After boasting three-straight wins during a season-long winning streak, DBU has fallen short in its last four at the home venue.
LAST TIME ON THE HARDWOOD – On Thursday the Patriots couldn't slow a hot-shooting Newman team that finished 66-percent from the field, and 67-percent behind the three-point arc. As a result, DBU dropped its sixth straight decision 91-76.
The home squad shot decent enough with a 47-percent clip from the floor. Dallas Baptist was up at halftime 41-40, largely due to going 16-for-17 from the free throw line. Leading the Patriots from the charity stripe was redshirt sophomore,
Jonathan Perry, going a perfect seven-for-seven.
In the second frame, DBU was unable to halt the Jet's sharp shooting and were outscored 51-35 the rest of the way. Newman also won the rebounding battle 24-21 and forced more turnovers by a slight margin, 13-12.
A trio of Patriot players notched double-digit performances in the setback. Perry broke the 20-point mark in the scoring column for the fourth time on the campaign with 21 points. Behind his team-high was senior,
Remy Ndiaye, with 16. Redshirt freshman,
Myles Johnson, also added 14. Sophomore,
Wesley Gipson, contributed nine off the bench for the Patriots.
PLAYERS TO WATCH – Perry has risen up as the leading scorer for the Men's Basketball Team. Through 13 games, the native of Kerrville, Texas has averaged 18.6 points per game (ppg), ranking him third in the Heartland Conference.
His personal best came at home against Southeastern Oklahoma State, when the starting forward posted a school record 47 points leading DBU to an 89-80 victory. Perry has boasted double-digit scoring affairs in nine of the team's 11 contests this year. He has broken the 20-point mark in four, including his historical night in program history.
Johnson continues to be a steady contributor ranking third on the squad with 11.2 ppg. The Arlington, Texas, native in his first year playing claimed a season-high 21 points versus Rogers State two weekends ago. Through 13 games, the forward has posted double-digits in scoring in seven of them, including three of his last four. The lone contest he missed was by a pair as he sank eight in the affair.
Johnson's personal best surpasses his previous high earned when he poured in 17 at homecoming versus Mid-America Christian. He sits second on the squad hitting 22 shots from three-point land just one behind the team leader, sophomore,
Charles Allen.
Ndiaye has been a force inside the post for DBU this season, especially at home. The native of Dakar, Senegal is averaging 11.3 ppg, but has boasted a 14.2 clip at the Burg Center on the campaign. All six of the senior's double figure performances have occurred in the friendly confines in Dallas, Texas.
The senior notched personal best outings twice this season, first with 26 points in a homecoming victory over Mid-America Christian. He bested that display a few weeks later in a loss to Texas-Permian Basin, pouring in 27. The forward is also leading the Patriots on the defensive end with 88 rebounds for a 6.8 average and has a team-high eight blocks.
SCOUTING THE AGGIES – Oklahoma Panhandle State (1-14, 1-5) enters Saturday's afternoon affair on a two-game losing streak. OPSU claimed its lone win on the campaign two weeks ago topping a solid Rogers State squad. The Aggies are still searching for their first road victory, going 0-10 away from Goodwell, Oklahoma.
In the team's latest setback, Oklahoma Christian scooted past OPSU to an 85-77 final. The Eagles outshot Oklahoma Panhandle State from the field 53-percent to 42-percent. Jeremy Newton paced the Aggie's offense with a game-high 27 points. Zilijan Jones and Jake Regier joined Newton in the double-digit scoring column with 12 apiece.
A trio of players are averaging double figures in points a game on the campaign. Newton heads the group with a 12.9 clip, while Jones is right behind at 12.6 ppg. Bill Lee Jr. is another scorer, tossing in 12.4 for OPSU.
Newton is heating up since conference action began, boasting a huge 22.6 ppg through six contests.
Last season DBU clinched both nail-biting endings over its opponent with the difference in each game combining for five points. At the Burg Center, the Patriots ended the 2012-13 campaign and Senior Day with a 74-72 victory. Perry delivered the clutch pair of game-winning free throws in the final 1.8 seconds following a costly Aggie's foul. Current sophomore,
Jason Gentry, led all scorers with 17 points in the season-ending triumph.
WORTH NOTING
The Patriots are outscoring the opposition 478-464 in the first half, but have been downed 546-491 in the second frame.
Gentry leads the squad in assists and steals with 57 and 22, respectively. Entering the week the guard ranked third in the league for assists with 4.3 a game. His 1.8 clip in steals also places the Hondo, Texas, native in the top five in the Heartland.
DBU is averaging 74.4 points on the year, but has only produced a 64.4 as a team in conference play.
