OPENING TIP – The Dallas Baptist Men's Basketball Team seeks to even its Heartland Conference Record after dropping its third straight on Thursday. The Patriots (4-6, 1-2) are also in search of their first road victory of the season, dropping a trio of match-ups away from the Burg Center. UA Fort Smith, the preseason Heartland favorites, is up next for DBU on Saturday for a 3 PM tip-off.
LAST TIME ON HARDWOOD – Dallas Baptist dropped its second-straight conference game on Thursday at Rogers State 90-74. The Patriots led in the early going, up by as many as six in the game's first six minutes. After that advantage was erased with 8:38 remaining in the first frame, DBU would trail the rest of the wa,y but did go into the locker room down just three at 43-40.
The first half saw the Patriots boast a 59% average from the field, but then slumped shooting only 27% in the second half. This cold streak led to DBU being outscored 47-34 in the final 20 minutes and eventually gave the Patriots another setback.
Redshirt freshman,
Myles Johnson, tallied a season-high 21 points, including 16 coming in the first stanza. Sophomore,
Charles Allen, and junior,
Wesley Gipson, chipped in double figures in scoring with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
PLAYERS TO WATCH – Redshirt sophomore,
Jonathan Perry has risen up as the leading scorer for the Men's Basketball Team. Through ten games, the native of Kerrville, Texas has averaged 19 points per game (ppg).
His personal best came at home against Southeastern Oklahoma State, when the starting forward posted a school record 47 points leading DBU to an 89-80 victory. Perry has boasted scoring team-highs in four games this season.
Johnson has quietly been a steady contributor ranking third on the squad with 11.2 ppg. The Arlington, Texas, native claimed a season-high in the team's most recent outing with 21 points. Through 10 games, the forward has posted double-digits in scoring in five of them; four coming in the first five contests on the campaign. Johnson's personal best surpasses his previous high earned when he poured in 17 at homecoming versus Mid-America Christian.
Senior,
Remy Ndiaye, has notched career-highs twice this campaign, both occurring at the Burg Center. The Dakar, Senegal, native is averaging 12.1 ppg, and poured in a season-high in the last Heartland Conference contest against Texas-Permian Basin with 27.
SCOUTING THE LIONS – UA Fort Smith (8-3, 1-2) has gotten off to a sluggish start in Heartland Conference action. The Lions snapped a two-game slide with an 86-76 win over Oklahoma Christian on Thursday.
Seth Youngblood led UAFS with 24 points, including five three-pointers. Jake Toupal added 13 and Alex Cooper rounded out the double figure scorers with 10.
Youngblood and Toupal pace the Lion's offense with 14.4 and 14.0 ppg, respectively. Tramel White is averaging 12.4 ppg, and Alex Cooper completes the quartet of double-digit scorers with 10.3.
The Lions are 6-0 at home this year, and captured its first Heartland victory in the friendly confines. Picked in the preseason to win the conference, UAFS opened league action with consecutive defeats on the road to close out the 2013 portion of the campaign.
Last season the programs split the season-series with the road team claiming victories at the opposition's venue. The Patriots pulled the upset on the eventual Heartland Conference Champions 93-79. The scoring total marked the second highest on that year, as DBU shot 62-percent from the floor and drained 69-percent (9-13) behind the arc.
Five Patriot players notched double figures in the big win, including four returning players on the current squad. Sophomore,
Jason Gentry, led the individual group with 19. Also recording double figures in the huge scoring affair included: Ndiaye, Gipson, and Allen.
HEARTLAND NUMBERS – DBU has gone 1-2 thus far in conference action, with the latest outing counting as a 90-74 setback at Rogers State. The Patriots claimed the Heartland Opener over Lubbock Christian 61-59.
Turnover margin has been a strength for the Patriots through the half-way part of the season. DBU ranks second only behind Newman in the league. DBU also ranks third in the league in free throw percentage at 73-percent.
UA Fort Smith earned its third consecutive nod as the preseason favorite in the Heartland Conference while entering as the defending champions. They did surrender the Heartland Conference Tournament Championship to St. Mary's last year.
The Lions are second in the conference entering this week averaging 89.5 points a contest behind Lubbock Christian with 89.7. DBU did earn its lone conference win holding LC's high scoring offense to just 59 points earlier this year.
UAFS shoots 51-percent from the field to claim third in the Heartland, and also sits 4
th in the league allowing 74.3 ppg.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE – Dallas Baptist opens its longest home stand of the campaign next week beginning a five-game stretch. The first contest of the new at the Burg Center year will be on Jan. 11 at 2 PM versus Oklahoma Christian. Heartland Conference play continues the following week as the Patriots host Newman and Oklahoma Panhandle on Jan. 16
th and 18
th, respectively. Fans can view the
Patriot Broadcast Network for all games, with pregame beginning 15 minutes prior to first tip.
