MULTIMEDIA COVERAGE Video: Patriot Broadcasting NetworkLivestats: DBU LivestatsFacebook: DBU Athletics THE LEADThe Dallas Baptist Women's Soccer Team returns to the pitch after enjoying a restful week off. DBU's latest match-up occurred on September 26 in a thrilling, 1-0, victory at Heartland Conference rival, St. Edward's University. That contest was a non-conference match.
The two squads interlock again this time at Patriot Soccer Field with a 5 PM kickoff that will begin league action. In 2013, both teams were atop the Heartland Standings as SEU went undefeated with a 9-0 record, and the Patriots were runners up at 8-1.
All seven affairs the Women's Soccer Team (4-2-1) have been involved in have been low scoring, as the squad has allowed five combined goals to the opposition overall. DBU has tallied no more than two goals thus far, and has totaled eight altogether.
The Patriots have been involved in three overtime affairs already, matching last season's total.
LAST TIME OUTIt was a typical low-scoring affair for both teams, as the defense controlled most of the ball possession in this one. The teams combined for fewer than 10 shots, as DBU notched a slight advantage, five to four, in shot attempts.
Junior
Ashley Cox, connected on a kick in the 53
rd minute to lift the Patriots in a huge momentum victory on the campaign. The Midlothian, Texas, native's netter rounded out a trio of shot attempts for the road squad that reflected what the team took in the second half.
DBU's goalkeeper, senior
Kerry Edwards, continued her strong season with the fourth shutout of the year, and has worked consecutive ones limiting the opposition scoreless through 180 minutes. She had two saves in the one-goal match.
IMPACT PLAYERSA pair of players have posted multiple goals on the season, with Cox pacing the squad with three, and junior
Emilie MacDonald adding two. The forward duo also rank in the top spots on the team with six and five points, respectively. Tying MacDonald in the point's category is senior
Lea Sedwick, who picked up her team-leading third assist in Friday's match.
Cox is ahead of the group with 26 shots total, while MacDonald and redshirt junior
Dixie Kurrus are behind at 17. A trio of Patriots have eclipsed the double digit mark including: Sedwick with 16, junior
Lindsey Eccles totaling 13, and freshman
Emma Durain notching 10.
Edwards has been closing on some huge historical numbers in the recent matches. The McKinney, Texas, native could garner her 50
th win in the four-year starter's career on Saturday. She also is only 12 saves away from logging 250 over the keeper's collegiate span.
On the current year, Edwards has picked up 28 saves and allowed five goals. At this point of the campaign, Edwards has amassed a season-high 664:21 minutes, working all of them in the net for a team that has gone beyond regulation three times.
SCOUTING THE HILLTOPPERS St. Edward's has fallen in three-straight contests, including back-to-back one-goal shutouts versus DBU and Midwestern State. In their latest setback hosting MSU, the Hilltoppers allowed an early goal at the 9:30 minute mark, and could not find the back of the net with 10 shots.
The Hilltoppers are 2-1 at away from the home confines, with the latest victory occurring at Texas A&M-Commerce. This contest was the most recent SEU found the win column.
All of SEU's victories have come at the hand of a shutout, and with the exception of a 3-1 Texas Woman's loss; every St. Edward's contest has been resolved in shutout fashion.
Riana Soobadoo paces the Hilltopper's offense with six points and three goals. A quartet of players are tied in second with four points each. Ari Garcia and Lauren Heller have contributed a goal and two assists, while Cailyn Trapani and Whytneigh Duffie added a pair of goals.
Lorrie Santoy has garnered the most action in the goalkeeper spot, tallying 690:45 minutes and collecting 17 saves off 40 shots faced. She has allowed six goals total, with five occurring during this current losing slide.
SERIES HISTORYIn previous meetings, DBU has gone 4-15 overall versus the Hilltoppers, dating back to 2004 when the squads played each other at least twice. The programs have met at least three times in the latest trio of campaigns, including the Heartland Conference Tournament Championship.
During that stretch, SEU holds a 6-3 edge, and is 1-2 in league tournament affairs.
In 2013, it was a difficult sweep for DBU to absorb, with the last pair of matches being decided by a single goal. In the 2-1 setback during the league tournament contest, departed senior
Danielle Presley, scored the only goal in three games the two teams met on the pitch for Dallas Baptist.
Her netter cut a 2-0 deficit in half, as SEU's Jessica Traves boasted a game-high, three points with an assist on the first goal by Heller, and later secured the victory with the second goal of the championship.
Edward's played in all three matches, including a weather-shortened decision which allowed the goalie 264:41 minutes of action. The goalie allowed five goals while nabbing four saves, as neither squad ever accomplished double-digit shot totals in the trio of meetings.
WORTH NOTINGThe Patriots have eclipsed the 20-shot attempt mark in all three home contests this season, including a season-high, 36, in the most recent outing versus Texas A&M-Commerce.
After the Heartland Conference Opener, DBU embarks on a season-long, seven-game road trip that begins with two non-conference matches and includes five league opponents.
When
Ashley Cox scores a goal, the DBU Women's Soccer Team is 3-0 on the campaign. The team was 10-0 in 2013 when the defending NCCAA First Team All-Region scored.
UP NEXTDallas Baptist takes to the road for its near month-long span without a home contest beginning on October 9 at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Kickoff for the non-conference affair is slated for 3 PM.
