Patriots Take Conference Opener Over Rogers State

Box Score

THE LEAD
The Dallas Baptist Men's Basketball Team connected on 16 shots from three-point range and cruised to a 90-74 win over Rogers State University in the Heartland Conference opener for both teams on Monday at the Burg Center.  DBU (6-2, 1-0) shot 48.5 percent from beyond the arc, including a 9-for-15 stretch in the second half to win their seventh straight home game dating back to February 13, 2014.

In a game dominated by the Patriots, DBU led Rogers State (6-3, 0-1) for all but nine seconds on the afternoon.  Leading 23-16 just past the midway point of the first half, a Myles Johnson three pointer gave DBU their first double-digit lead.  It was one of Johnson's five trey's on the day, who finished one three-pointer shy of tying a career high.

After the Hillcats drew to within one with just over seven minutes to play until the half, the Patriots went on a 16-11 run to take a six-point lead into the locker room.

Coming out of the break, DBU connected on their first seven shots, capped off by a Tim Simmons' fast break layup, putting the Patriots on top 60-45 with 14:59 remaining.

Another DBU three-pointer, this time from Jordan Walker, gave DBU a 14 point advantage at the 10:22 mark.  It was one of three shots from downtown that Walker connected on, who was joined by Jonathan Perry and Tim Simmons, who also connected on three three-pointers of their own.

In control, 77-60, with inside five minutes to play, a Simmons one handed dunk put the exclamation point on a 19 point Patriot lead and forced a Rogers State timeout.

Three Patriots finished the night in double-digits including Myles Johnson's 24, Jonathan Perry with 18, and Tim Simmons added 15 of his own.  DBU also got a incredible effort from point guard, Shannon Lilly, who tied Armie Lewis for a school record with 11 assists.

DBU HEAD COACH, BLAKE FLICKNER – ON THE PATRIOTS HOT SHOOTING
"We made a lot of shots, but a lot of that had to do with taking what they gave us.  They do a great job of helping on drives and that left guys open on kick-outs.  It all starts with how well we move the ball and I'm really pleased with how well we did that tonight."

DBU HEAD COACH, BLAKE FLICKNER – ON THE DBU BENCH PLAY
"In the first half we had some guys in foul trouble and just to keep our guys fresh with as fast as we're playing and give our guys some break, I thought our bench did an outstanding job.  It doesn't always show up in the box score some of the things that they do.  I thought Jordan Pratt had a really good game with eight points, Jordan Gosey battled on the boards, and I was really pleased with the way Jordan Walker came in and shot the ball as well."

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
16 – Most three-pointers by DBU this year and is the most since DBU hit 16 versus Mid-America Christian on November 23, 2013.
22 – Patriots scored 22 points off of Rogers State turnovers compared to the Hillcats 12 points off DBU turnovers.
55% - The DBU trio of Myles Johnson, Jonathan Perry, and Tim Simmons shot a combined 55% from the field today, connecting on 17-of-31 shots.
