Arkansas-Fort Smith Tops DBU in OT, 92-88

THE LEAD
The Dallas Baptist Men's Basketball Team fell to the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith Lions, 92-88 in overtime to finish out the 2014 segment of their season. The loss drops the Patriots to 6-3 on the year and 1-1 in Heartland Conference play.

Leading the way for DBU was Tim Simmons, who had 24 points. Jonathan Perry and Myles Johnson each amassed double-digit points with 21 and 16, respectively.

In the first half, UA-Fort Smith held their largest lead of the game, as they created an early 13-6 advantage. UAFS would carry this momentum into halftime, as they would lead the Patriots, 35-31. DBU kept the score close with 13 of Simmons' 26 points coming in the first half.

In the second half, DBU battled back against the Lions to tie the game at 41 and would then continue to widen the gap to 55-48, creating their largest lead of the afternoon. It would be short lived though, as a seven point Lion's rally, led  by Davaunta Thomas brought the score back to a 55-55 tie.

As both teams traded leads late into the second half tied at 74, a foul on Seth Youngblood put him at the charity stripe, where he sank two free throws to put UAFS up 76-74 with :37 remaining. Youngblood would end up leading all scorers with 25 points. 

Down two points in the final seconds of regulation, a Jonathan Perry would lay up with 5.7 seconds left in the game tied the game and gave the Patriots new life in overtime.

Midway into overtime with the score tied at 83, UA-Fort Smith would begin to gain separation against DBU as they went on to score seven of the next nine points, controlling the game with a 90-85 lead. A late three by Johnson pulled DBU within two points at 90-88, but it would not be enough, as the Lions outlasted the Patriots, 92-88.

"There's going to be some games that the flow is not there and the mentally tough team that can grind it out in a possession game and do better at taking care of the ball and get getting great shots on each possession will have an advantage. There will be other games like this in conference and we will have to learn from this and get a little sharper for the next one."

The Patriots will not return to action until 2015, where they will face Hillsdale College in Moore, Oklahoma on New Year's Day, Thursday, January 1, 2015. Tip off is set for 2pm.
