Box Score
For the third time in four games, the DBU Patriot Baseball Team earned a comeback win, this time an 8-7 victory over visiting University of Pennsylvania, Saturday evening at Horner Ballpark. The win completes a three game sweep of the visiting Quakers, with Sunday's fourth game cancelled due to incoming weather.
Â
Mike Wesolowski provided the heroics in the finale, drilling a two-run double in the eighth inning with the Patriots trailing 7-6. The hit would prove the deciding factor as
Brandon Koch shut the door in the ninth inning to give DBU the victory.
Â
The comeback was required for DBU, as Penn scored early and consistently. The visiting club tallied a single run in each of the first five innings, including a pair of solo home runs from Austin Bossart and Rick Brebner, leading by as many as four. DBU countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, thanks to an
Austin Listi sacrifice fly and a bases loaded walk by
Nash Knight.
Â
The Patriots tied the contest in the bottom of the fifth, scoring a trio of runs on a
Trevin Sonnier solo home run and a two-run single from
KJ Alexander. Bossart struck again in the sixth, this time on a two-run single, giving the Quakers the 7-5 lead.
Â
Wesolowski scored on a
Daniel Salters ground out in the bottom of the seventh, cutting the DBU deficit in half, 7-6. Wesolowski produced the tying and go ahead runs with his double to the right-center field gap, scoring
David Martinelli and
Camden Duzenack, to give the Patriots an 8-7 lead, the eventual final.
Â
"Mike (Wesolowski) had a great approach in that last at bat, he got his pitch and didn't wait around, it was great to see him execute," said DBU Head Coach
Dan Heefner. "Overall, we were really encouraged through the offseason with the character and perseverance of this entire team. We always talk about being a lot tougher together, and you saw that tonight."
Â
Koch came out of the bullpen to earn the win for the second time in as many days. The sophomore worked two innings, allowing one hit and striking out four.
Josh Urban worked 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief to keep the Patriots in the hunt.
Â
"Our pitchers have done a great job of keeping us close in these games," added Heefner about his bullpen. All totaled, Koch tallied seven strikeouts in three innings over the weekend.
Â
Leading the way on the offensive end was Wesolowski who registered three hits in four at bats, scoring three times and knocking in two. Duzenack hit his eighth double of the season and scored three times, with Alexander tying for the team-high with a pair of RBI.
Â
Penn falls to 0-3 as this weekend was their 2014 opener. Jeff McGarry took the loss for the Quakers, surrending three runs, one of them earned, on two hits. Bossart was the only player with multiple hits, totaling two, as well as three RBI and a run scored. Ian Kukowski led the club with two runs scored.
Â
DBU returns to action, Tuesday, making the short trip to Fort Worth to take on TCU. The contest is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start.
