DBU's Season Comes to a Close at NCCAA Tournament

Box Score

In what would be their final game of the 2013-14 season, the Dallas Baptist Men's Basketball Team dropped a 75-61 decision to Southern Nazarene University in the NCCAA Regional Semifinal game on Friday.  Jonathan Perry led the way for the Patriots, scoring a game-high 18 points.

DBU (14-14) grabbed an early lead, jumping out in front by five when Perry drained a three just inside the game's first three minutes.  The 7-2 advantage would be the largest lead of the night for the Patriots and would be short-lived as Southern Nazarene (15-12) would take a 34-21 margin into the locker room at the half.

The Patriots would not be able to cut the double-digit lead to single digits until the game's final five-and-a-half minutes.  A three-pointer from sophomore, Charles Allen, brought DBU to within eight with 5:29 to play.  Senior, Remy Ndiaye, capped off a 10-2 run when he knocked down a shot from beyond the arc to cut the SNU lead to five.  That would be as close as the Patriots would come as Southern Nazarene finished the game on an 11-2 run.

"Tonight, SNU was the better team, but I'm proud of the way our guys competed and gave it everything they had to the very end," DBU Head Coach, Blake Flickner remarked following the game.  "I thought we made a great push in the second half, but they were able to respond with some big shots of their own down the stretch."

The loss caps off a thrilling finish to the 2013-2014 season for DBU.  The Patriots won seven of their last nine games, including a thrilling double-overtime win over the Heartland Conference's regular season champions, Arkansas-Fort Smith.

"I'm really proud of this group.  They stayed coachable and kept working hard all season," Flickner said.  "We had a tough stretch where we lost six in a row, but they stuck together and turned it around.  The last 12 games we were playing at a really high level and that says a lot about their character.  I love these guys and I'm proud of who they are as men and as a team."

Tonight's contest marks the final game in the careers of seniors, Remy Ndiaye and Cory Carden.  As DBU looks to the 2014-2015 season, the Patriots will return a strong nucleus from this year's squad, including the Heartland Conference's leading scorer, Jonathan Perry.  DBU will also return Myles Johnson, who averaged 12 points per game and Jason Gentry, who dished out a team-high 130 assists this year.
