DBU Offense Explodes in 20-10 Win at SFA

Box Score

The Dallas Baptist Baseball Team erupted for 20 runs on 16 hits in a 20-10 win on the road at Stephen F. Austin University on Tuesday.  DBU's offensive attack was highlighted by homeruns from David Martinelli and Mike Wesolowksi.  Martinelli, a freshman from Waxahachie, Texas, finished the night with five RBI and was just a double shy of hitting for the cycle.

After scoring three runs in the first inning, the Patriots (17-7), gave up six runs to SFA (10-13) in their half of the first.  DBU's Joseph Shaw, came on in relief in the second inning and silenced the Lumberjack bats, tossing three shutout innings.

Down 6-4 in the fifth inning, Nash Knight laced a two out single through the left side of the infield, scoring Daniel Salters and Martinelli to tie the game at six apiece.
In the sixth, Wesolowski's homerun gave the Patriots an 8-6 lead.  It marked the second round-tripper of the year for the senior from Mesa, Arizona, and would put the Patriots up for good.

DBU struck for five more in the seventh, including a bases clearing triple off the bat of Martinelli that sent SFA outfielder, Rick Cruz, crashing into the center field wall.  Martinelli attempted to stretch the triple into a grand slam homerun, but was thrown out on the relay to home plate.

Leading 12-7 in the eighth, the Patriots offense exploded for eight more runs, with the big hit coming on an Austin Listi double that scored two runs.

DBU finished the game with four players racking up multi-hit games.  Lead-off hitter, Drew Turbin, went 3-for-5 and scored four runs.  Martinelli finished the night with three hits and a season-high five RBI.  Listi chipped in a three-hit night and Salters also collected three hits and ripped a pair of doubles.

"It was good to see our guys get going offensively like we did tonight and regain some confidence at the plate," DBU Head Coach Dan Heefner said.

On the mound, the Patriots used seven pitchers on the night.  Freshman, Trevor Conn, earned the win, throwing two innings and allowing just one run.  "I thought Trevor came out and was really sharp in his two innings tonight," said Heefner.  "He's a guy that has really good stuff on the hill as a freshman and tonight was a great opportunity to get him a couple of innings of work."

DBU now prepares for their Missouri Valley Conference opener on Friday at Bradley University.  First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm.  Friday's game is the first of a three-game series in Peoria, Illinois, versus Bradley.  All the action can be heard on the Patriot Broadcasting Network, beginning with the Patriot Pre-Game Show at  5:30 pm.
