Box Score THE LEADThe Dallas Baptist Men's Basketball Team suffered an 88-75 loss on the road to the Newman Jets on Monday afternoon in Wichita, Kansas. The loss marks only the second one on the season for the Patriots in which DBU (10-6, 4-4) lost by double-digits.
Â
In a game controlled by Newman (8-6, 4-4) for the majority of the 40 minute affair, the Patriots' only lead came just four minutes into the first half. After a
Jordan Walker free throw put DBU up by two at the 15:31 mark, the Jets erupted on a 10-0 run to go up 21-11. Led by Jeremy Espinoza's 11 points in the first half, Newman opened up a 41-33 advantage over the Patriots heading into the locker room.
DBU trimmed the deficit to four on an
Amari Bryant three-pointer with just over 13 minutes to play, but the Jets responded again. Going on a 13-7 run over the next six-and-a-half minutes, Newman extended their lead back to double-digits at 64-54 with 6:37 left in the second half.
A
Chris Strong layup pulled the Patriots back to within six one minute later, but that would be as close as DBU would come, as Newman went back up by 11 with 2:32 remaining. Forced to foul the rest of the way, the Jets went a perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line over the final two minutes to seal the win.
DBU was led by Bryant's season-high 17 points and
Jordan Walker, who posted a career-best 14 points. Four Jets scored in double-digits, led by Reggie Baker, who totaled 24. James Pegues finished with 16, while Jeremy Espinoza scored 16, and Ryan McCarthy added 10 of his own.
Hampered by foul trouble for a good part of the night, DBU's
Jonathan Perry and
Myles Johnson were limited on the offensive end. Perry finished with 11 points before fouling out, while Johnson totaled eight and fouled out as well.
DBU HEAD COACH, BLAKE FLICKNER – ON THE LOSS"Newman was the better team tonight. They got us in almost every phase of the game. We never quite got into a very good flow offensively and it was one of those games that felt like when we'd plug one hole, another one would pop open. It's a good learning experience and an opportunity for us to try and grow and bounce back next weekend."
