THE LEADNo. 20 Dallas Baptist won their fifth consecutive game with a convincing 17-3 win over Baylor on Tuesday night in front of 1,102 fans at Horner Ballpark. The victory is the second of the year for the Patriots over Baylor and marks the first time DBU (11-2) has swept a season series over the Bears since 1996.Â
Â
On a night in which the Dallas Baptist offense erupted for 20 hits, seven Patriots recorded multi-hit games. The hit parade began for DBU in the second inning, when
David Martinelli tripled to right-center field. Martinelli would come home to score the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Tagg Duce.
Â
Follolwing a bases loaded walk to
Trooper Reynolds that scored another run in the third, the Patriots tacked on four more runs in the fourth inning, beginning with a two-run double by
Drew Turbin. After Baylor (6-9) starter, Theron Kay, was pulled with one out in the fourth,
Camden Duzenack belted his third home run of the year on the first pitch he saw from Troy Montemayor over the left field wall.
Â
On the hill, DBU starter,
Jay Calhoun, kept Baylor scoreless through four-and-two-third innings before giving way to
Drew Smith. The junior right-hander picked up where Calhoun left off, tossing an inning-and-a-third of shutout relief, while striking out two.
Â
In the Patriots' fifth, DBU added five more runs, highlighted by a
Justin Wall three-run homer to right to make the score 11-0. One inning later, the Patriots continued to pour on the runs, as a
Chane Lynch double plated two and Turbin collected his fifth RBI of the night on a two run single to center.
Â
Leading 15-0 through six innings, the Patriots scored two more runs in the seventh before surrendering three runs to the Bears in the ninth.
Two freshman relievers for DBU also saw action on the mound in the late innings, as
Seth Elledge threw a scoreless frame, while
Eric White made his debut and surrendered three runs over two innings. White struck out three and did not walk a batter in his first outing as a Patriot.
Â
The win is the largest margin of victory by DBU over Baylor since the Patriots won 16-3 over the Bears on April 8, 2009. It also marks the worst defeat Baylor has suffered since a 15 run loss to LSU on June 8, 2003, in the NCAA Baton Rouge Super Regional.
