Patriots Win in Walk-Off Fashion in Ten Innings

THE LEAD
No. 20 Dallas Baptist overcame a 4-0 deficit to Texas Southern on Thursday night at Horner Ballpark to claim a walk-off win in 10 innings.  Tied at five apiece in the tenth inning and runners at first and second with nobody out, a sacrifice bunt attempt by Trevin Sonnier resulted in a throwing error by Tigers' third baseman, Gerrick Jimenez, allowing Justin Wall to score the winning run from second.

After falling behind 4-0 through the first inning-and-a-half, DBU (12-2) began their comeback with a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by Nash Knight.  The Patriots would cut the Texas Southern (8-8) lead in half in the fourth on a single by Drew Turbin that plated Chane Lynch.  In the fifth, Lynch drew DBU to within one on a single through the left side that brought home David Martinelli.

On the mound, DBU starter, Joseph Shaw, made a quick exit in the second inning, after allowing four runs.  With one out in the second, the Patriots turned to freshman, Dalton Higgins, who would work the next four innings and surrender just one run, while striking out five.

Down a run in the sixth, TSU added to their lead on an RBI single by Jimenez to make it 5-3 Tigers.  Junior right-hander, Chance Adams would take over for Higgins in the sixth and fired three-and-two-third innings without allowing a run and striking out a season-high six.

Texas Southern held a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth when DBU loaded the bases with nobody out against Tigers' closer, Devin Konarik.   A single by Tagg Duce to right pulled the Patriots to within one, before Chane Lynch delivered his career-best, fourth hit of the night, on a sharp single to left that plated Trevin Sonnier with the tying run.

TSU would get out of the jam as Konarik retired Knight, Turbin, and Camden Duzenack, to send the game to extra innings.  In the tenth, Patriot reliever, Sean Stutzman, retired the Tigers in order.  DBU opened their half of the tenth with a single by Justin Wall, followed by a walk to Daniel Salters.  With runners at first and second, Trevin Sonnier's sacrifice bunt towards third forced an errant throw by Gerrick Jimenez, as Wall came into score on the wild throw.

DBU HEAD COACH, DAN HEEFNER – ON THE JOB OF THE BULLPEN IN THE WIN
"I thought Dalton Higgins was really good tonight.  He came in and was able to execute his pitches and his outing kept us in the game.  Chance Adams  was also really strong and was able to pick up where Dalton left off and then Sean did a great job in the tenth."
