THE LEADNo. 15 Dallas Baptist completed a three-game sweep of the Illinois State Redbirds with a 10-3 win on Sunday at Horner Ballpark. Leading by a score of 4-3 going into the eighth inning, a leadoff triple by
Tagg Duce sparked a six-run rally, as DBU (22-3, 5-1) extended the longest home winning streak in College Baseball to 14. The victory also sets a new school record for the most consecutive home wins in the program's NCAA Division I history dating back to 2004.
Â
After DBU starter,
Trevor Conn, retired the side in order in the first inning, the Patriots struck first when
Drew Turbin came in to score from second on a throwing error by Redbirds' shortstop, Dennis Colon. A double by
Matt Duce in the second, followed by a two-out single to left by
Camden Duzenack extended the DBU lead to 2-0.
Â
Illinois State (11-13, 0-3) pushed a run across in the third, before DBU responded with a pair of runs in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run double by Duzenack.
Â
Leading 4-1 into the seventh inning, the Redbirds loaded the bases with two outs. A double to left by ISU pinch-hitter, Joe Kelch, cut the Patriot lead to one. Patriot reliever,
Drew Smith, would work out of the jam, getting Daniel Dwyer to fly out and then returned in the eighth inning to retires the side in order and preserve the 4-3 lead.
Â
In the eighth, a
Daniel Salters RBI double to the gap in right-center gave the Patriots a 5-3 advantage. With the bases loaded and only one out, a ground ball off the bat of
Drew Turbin resulted in a play at the plate, but Paul DeJong's throw was in the dirt and went past ISU catcher, Jean Ramirez, allowing two more runs to score. A two-run double by Duzenack and an RBI double by
David Martinelli opened the Patriot lead to seven, before
Seth Elledge came out of the pen to work a scoreless ninth.
