Patriots Drop Series at North Florida

THE LEAD
Five runs in the second inning were enough on Sunday afternoon for North Florida (17-9) to defeat DBU (14-9) as the Patriots dropped their first weekend series of the 2017 season with a 6-2 loss at Harmon Field.  Jordan Martinson (3-2) took the loss for the Patriots, but the bullpen was great once again, holding the Ospreys scoreless in their 3.2 innings of work. Tim Millard accounted for the only scoring for DBU, as he belted a two-run home run in the third inning.

The Ospreys were able to jump out to an early lead in the second inning, as UNF put together a two-out rally.  Following a walk and a hit-batter, a two-run single from Yah Gurrola and a three-run homerun by Wesley Weeks gave the Ospreys a five run lead.  Millard would cut into the deficit in the third inning with his third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field with Camryn Williams aboard after a leadoff single.

North Florida responded in the bottom of the third inning with another run off Martinson by sandwiching two singles around a sacrifice bunt to push the lead back to four.  The sophomore lefthander would pitch the Patriots into the fifth inning before handing the ball off to Travis Stone with one out and a runner on first.  Stone quickly recorded the final two outs of the frame and the score remained 6-2 into the late innings.

Stone was excellent in his time on the mound, allowing only two infield singles in 2.1 innings of work. Unfortunately for him, those two choppers came in the bottom of the seventh inning and led to his departure with two outs.  Kragen Kechely came on to retire the final batter and get the game to the eighth inning.

The Patriots would threaten in their half of the eighth, but stranded a pair runners at first and second.  In the ninth, Ospreys' closer, Matthew Naylor, closed out the Patriots to earn his second save of the weekend.
