THE LEAD
Garrett Wolforth delivered a three-run homerun in the bottom of the seventh that put the finishing touch on a 13-2 win over Wichita State on Saturday afternoon at Horner Ballpark. The gamewinner was one of three long balls in the game for the Patriots as
Austin Listi and
Camden Duzenack left the yard.
Jordan Martinson (6-3) earned the win with a five-inning outing, allowing two runs on seven hits to go with seven strikeouts. Cody Tyler (4-5) suffered the loss after giving up seven runs on five hits in the first two innings.
WSU scored first for the second time in as many games by way of a pop-up lost in the sun by
Luke Bandy that turned into an RBI double. DBU responded with a four-spot in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a three-run blast off the bat of Duzenack. In the bottom of the second, Listi extended the lead to 7-1 with a 458-foot homerun, the 43
rd of his career and the team's second of the game. The Shockers cut the lead to 7-2 in the fourth on a two-out pinch-hit RBI single by Dayton Dugas.
The Patriots loaded the bases in the fourth with two outs after a Duzenack walk, but left the bases loaded as Wolforth struck out. Despite having runners in scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings, DBU was held hitless and scoreless through the two frames. After giving up a leadoff single to begin the top of the sixth,
Dan Heefner removed Martinson in favor of
Gavin Fritz, who retired the next three batters to close out the inning.
DBU tacked on two more in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Wolforth and an
Evan Sandmann sac fly to take a 9-2 lead. Wolforth's winning bomb highlighted a four-run seventh inning, which also saw
Matt Duce hit an RBI single. Fritz finished the game with two no-hit innings of relief and one strikeout.

GARRETT WOLFORTH - ON THE HOMERUN IN HIS FINAL AT-BAT
"The whole day, I was just trying to stay in the middle of the field and see the ball deep, because I was getting out in front a little bit. In that last at-bat, I got to two strikes, and the two-strike plan is to see the ball as deep as you can and then putting a good swing on it."
