Clemson Bats Stay Hot in First Game of Doubleheader

THE LEAD
No. 10 DBU dropped its second straight game Saturday in a 9-1 decision in the first game of a twin bill at No. 11 Clemson. Drew Wharton's two-homer day propelled the Tigers (6-0) to their third straight game with at least nine runs scored.

The Patriots (3-2) struggled at the plate for the second straight day, as Clemson most of its damage in the second and third innings.

Wharton's first home run, a three-run shot off of Jordan Martinson (0-1) opened the scoring in the second inning. Bryce Teodosio added a solo homer later in the inning.

An RBI single by Robert Jolly knocked Martinson out of the game in the third. MacGregor Hines came on in relief and allowed another three-run home run to Wharton.

Hines would settle in, not allowing another hit in two and two-thirds innings. Jarod Bayless pitched a scoreless sixth before allowing a run to cross the plate in the seventh. Sean Boyle pitched a perfect eighth, striking out one batter.

DBU scored its lone run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Jameson Hannah that drove in Jimmy Glowenke.

Brooks Crawford (1-0) earned the win for Clemson, pitching five shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out five batters while walking none.
