THE RUNDOWN
No. 23 DBU scored five runs in the eighth inning Saturday afternoon in Terre Haute, Indiana, to complete an eight-run comeback against Indiana State. The Patriots trailed by six after two innings of play but clawed their way back into the game with multiple runs in three different innings on their way to a 12-10 win over the Sycamores.
For the second straight game, DBU trailed early after giving up first inning runs. Friday night it was only a one-run deficit but, Saturday, the Sycamores struck for three runs on four hits in the opening frame against
Luke Eldred. Eldred exited the game one inning later after allowing two baserunners with one out and gave the ball to
Jordan Martinson, who allowed three runs to cross the plate before getting out of the inning to make it 6-0 after two innings of play.
Luke Bandy got DBU on the board in the third inning with a leadoff homerun, his first of the season, but ISU plated three more runs off Martinson in the fourth inning to establish an eight-run lead to the middle frames. The Patriot offense tried to crawl back into the game with four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to cut the lead to two but Indiana State regained a three-run lead with a run in the sixth.
In the eighth, DBU finally took the lead. After a pair of walks,
Jimmy Glowenke doubled to cut the lead to 10-8. After a two out walk to load the bases,
Garrett Wolforth ripped the first pitch he saw over the right fielders head to tie the game at 10. One batter later,
Evan Sandmann delivered a two run double of his own that completed the Patriot comeback.
Up 12-10, DBU turned to
MacGregor Hines who closed out Indiana State with two innings of shutout baseball, picking up his second save of the season.
COACH DAN HEEFNER ON THE COMEBACK
"I think the difference happened even when we were down 9-1, the guys didn't give up. That's what I was most proud of, how we have progressed as the season has gone on. I thought the guys did a good job even when we were down they kept competing, they kept talking the game, they didn't pack it in. I thought we continued to have good at-bats and you just chip away."
