THE RUNDOWN
No. 25 DBU manufactured a lead before
Tim Millard's three-run home run solidified the lead in a 7-3 win in the rubber match of the Patriots' weekend series at Indiana State.
Â
The game's first five runs came in to score on sacrifice flies. The Sycamores (19-16, 4-8 Missouri Valley Conference) took the first lead of the game with a sac fly in the second inning. The Patriots (25-12, 7-2 MVC) responded with back-to-back sac flies by
Devlin Granberg and
Matt Duce to take the lead in the top of the third, only for Indiana State to tie it with another sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.
Â
After a double steal by Granberg and
Jameson Hannah,
Jimmy Glowenke put the Patriots back on top with a sac fly in the fifth that drove home Hannah. Millard followed with an RBI infield single to score Granberg.
Â
Trevor Conn (5-0) pitched five innings, allowing two runs on five hits with one walk. After an infield hit drove in a run for Indiana State off
Sean Boyle in the sixth,
Jarod Bayless entered the game and held down the fort for the final 3.2 innings, allowing no hits and striking out five Sycamores.
Â
On a day on which conditions suppressed long fly balls, Millard's home run cleared the left field fence, driving in Hannah and Granberg for the final Patriot runs of the day. Bayless closed out the game by striking out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth inning for his first career save.
THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- The Patriots won their eighth straight weekend series, a program record.

COACH DAN HEEFNER ON THE PATRIOTS' ADAPTABILITY
"[One] thing I was proud of was, with the conditions of the ballpark today, we were squaring up a ton of balls, but they weren't going anywhere, so we had to do some different things… The double steal was what led to those two runs [in the fifth] I was proud that they were able to do some other things to create some offense."
