THE RUNDOWN
No. 2 DBU fell short of a Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title as No. 1 Missouri State used a game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings and won in the 10th on a walk-off base hit.
Playing as the visiting team at Horner Ballpark per MVC Tournament rules, the Patriots (40-19) jumped out on top with a three-run homer by Tim Millard in the top of the first inning. The Bears (39-15) scored three times on four hits in the bottom of the third to tie the game.
Devlin Granberg's fourth-inning line drive was headed for the gap in left center field until a diving Hunter Steinmetz snared it and limited Granberg to a sacrifice fly to put the Patriots up by one. Two innings later, Missouri State tied the game when Jarod Bayless dropped a popped-up bunt with two outs in the sixth, allowing a run to come home.
Jameson Hannah's two-run triple into the right field corner in the eighth broke a 4-4 tie, but Jeremy Eierman's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth forced an extra frame. A single and a walk set up John Privitera with runners at first and second with one out. He lined a 3-2 pitch into right center to drive in the game-winning run.
THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- The Patriots need to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament to continue their season. The selection show begins at 11 a.m. on ESPNU.
- Granberg passed Ben Zobrist and Drew Noss to become DBU's single-season record holder for stolen bases in the Division I era, swiping his 23rd base of the year in the first inning.
- The last five MVC Tournament Championships have gone to either Missouri State or DBU.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
49 – Kody Funderburk, who reached base four times, extended his on-base streak to 49 games.
