THE RUNDOWN
No. 3 DBU could not solve the nation's ERA leader in the first round of the NCAA Fayetteville Regional as they fell 9-0 to No. 2 Southern Mississippi at Baum Stadium on Friday.
The Patriots (40-20) had chances to score against Nick Sandlin (10-0), who entered the game with a Division I-leading 1.13 earned run average, getting runners to second and third with one out in the fourth and loading the bases in the sixth. A pair of strikeouts ended the fourth-inning threat, and a sharply-hit double play ball quelled the Patriot rally in the sixth.
Trevor Conn (8-2) held the Golden Eagles (44-16) to one run on one hit, a second-inning solo home run, over the first 3.2 innings, but a three-hit rally produced two more runs.
Jordan Martinson took over in the fifth inning, pitching a scoreless fifth but giving up four runs in the sixth. Southern Miss tacked on runs in the seventh and eighth to bring the final score to 9-0.
THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- The Patriots will face No. 4 Oral Roberts, which lost 10-2 to host Arkansas on Friday afternoon, on Saturday. The winner faces the loser of Saturday night's game between Arkansas and Southern Miss on Sunday afternoon. The loser goes home.
- Granberg collected his 103rd hit of the season to set the Patriots' single-season record for hits in the Division I era.
- Jameson Hannah was 0-2, with both outs made on hard-hit line drives to second base.
COACH DAN HEEFNER ON A TOUGH NIGHT FOR THE PATRIOTS
"We knew coming in that Southern Miss has a really good team and Sandlin is a great pitcher. He threw well tonight. We had a couple opportunities and didn't capitalize."
