No. 23 DBU Drops Game One Versus No. 13 North Carolina

THE LEAD
No. 23 DBU dropped its first road contest of the season Saturday in a 9-0 loss at No. 13 North Carolina. Ray Gaither (1-1) only managed one scoreless inning as the heart of the Tar Heel order did repeated damage.

North Carolina (6-0) took an early 2-0 lead after Aaron Sabato doubled home Dylan Harris and later came around to score in the first. An RBI single by Angel Zarate later in the inning the extended the Tar Heel lead to 3-0.   

After a 1-2-3 second inning, a two-RBI single to left by Zarate made it 5-0 in favor of the Tar Heels in the bottom of the third. Gaither was chased from the game after 3.1 innings. He exited after allowing six runs, four of them earned allowed on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

Chas Sagedahl came on in relief of Gaither, allowing three runs on three hits in 4.1 innings of work. One run was earned as he walked three batters and struck out three. Alec Baker made his Patriot debut going 0.1 of an inning not allowing a run.

Joey Lancelotti (2-0) pitched seven shutout innings to earn his second victory of the season, giving up four hits and two walks while striking out seven batters.
 
THREE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
- The last time DBU was shut out in the regular season was on May 4, 2019, versus Missouri State.
- Golden Spikes Award Watch List Member Aaron Sabato, who came in batting .111, recorded two hits with an RBI double and a pair of walks reaching base five times, while also scoring two runs.
- North Carolina improved to 69-14 at home since the start of 2018.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
3 – Zarate and Sabato combined to score three runs, going 4-for-7 at the plate with four RBI and a pair of walks.
10 – DBU stranded ten total base runners.
.206 – The Patriots managed hitting .206 as a team against UNC pitching.

UP NEXT
DBU and UNC will start game two approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of game one. Chandler Arnold (0-0, 9.82 ERA) will take the mound for the Patriots, facing Will Sandy (1-0, 1.29 ERA).
